On November 14, 2024, Indian students protested outside the Oxford Union in the UK, voicing their disapproval of a debate about Kashmiri independence. The discussion, organized by the Oxford Union, included panelists supporting and opposing the motion, sparking controversy over the selection of speakers and the sensitive nature of the topic.
The discussion, titled This House Believes in the Independent State of Kashmir, focused on the political status of Kashmir, a region historically disputed by India and Pakistan. The protest was held against the Oxford Unions selection of panelists. The panel for the motion included Dr. Muzzamil Ayyub Thakur, a Kashmiri leader of the Justice Foundation and the Kashmir Freedom Movement. Thakur opposed Indian control of Kashmir, and Professor Zafar Khan, chairman of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Diplomatic Bureau. Opponents of the motion included Prem Shankar Jha, former media advisor to former Prime Minister VP Jha, Yusuf Kundgol, and Siddhant Nagrath.
INSIGHT UK, a British-Hindu group, formally objected to the debate, voicing serious concerns over the decision to host the discussion. They questioned the credibility of the debate, citing the alleged links of speakers Muzzamil Ayyub Thakur and Zafar Khan to terrorism. Thakur faced accusations of incitement and hate speech, with links to groups under investigation for terrorist connections. The JKLF, led by Zafar Khan, has a record of violent actions targeting the Kashmiri Hindu community.
The Oxford Union shared on Instagram, The Kashmir question, a parting gift of British colonial rule, has troubled the subcontinent since 1947, resulting in multiple wars. The continued push for Kashmiri independence has sustained a long-standing struggle, rooted in the regions quest for self-determination and autonomy. This has led to persistent unrest, human rights concerns, and renewed demand for autonomy among the Kashmiris. While nuclear-armed neighbors vie for control and geopolitical influence, the desire for peace among the population remains strong. Could an independent Kashmir be the answer to this enduring crisis?
Students carried banners and shouted slogans such as “Bharat Mata Ki Jai, Vande Mataram”. The slogan translates as “Victory to Mother India, I salute the Motherland.” The protest expressed dissatisfaction with the event and the speakers involved. INSIGHT UK reposted the protest, reaffirming their stance on Kashmir. They stated, Jammu Kashmir WAS India, Jammu Kashmir IS India, Jammu Kashmir WILL BE India.
