    Who is Savitri Jindal, India’s richest Woman to contest Haryana Polls as Independent Candidate?

    Savitri Jindal, the mother of BJP Kurukshetra MP Naveen Jindal and a previous candidate for the party’s poll ticket in the Haryana Assembly Elections, filed her nomination as an independent candidate for the Hisar seat on Thursday. Notably, the 74-year-old Savitri Jindal is the widow of the late OP Jindal, a well-known industrialist.

    According to Forbes India, with a net worth of USD 29.1 billion, she stood as the richest woman in the nation to contest Haryana Polls as an Independent Candidate. She also ranked 46th in the list of billionaires in India.

    She has entered a contest against Haryana Minister and sitting MLA from Hisar, Kamal Gupta as an independent candidate after being denied a ticket by the BJP— a ruling party for Haryana Polls. Savitri Jindal aspired for a BJP ticket to contest polls from Hisar. But the party re-nominated Kamal Gupta from the Hisar seat.

    Despite her political struggles, she remained a significant personality in the business and Political arenas of her career.

    After Filing her nomination, Savitri Jindal pledged to serve Hisar for its development and transformation. “The people of Hisar are my family and Om Prakash Jindal had established my relationship with this family”, she added.

    “This is my last election; I want to fight with love and serve them,” the 74-year-old politician further added.

    Further, Savitri Jindal was asked whether contesting against the ruling party to win the seat would not be considered rebellion, as BJP nominated Kamal Gupta from the Hisar Assembly segment.

    “It won’t be considered so. I had only campaigned for my son (Naveen Jindal in the Lok Sabah polls). I have not taken any membership (of the BJP),” she noted.

    Who is Savitri Jindal? 

    Savitri Jindal was elected twice as an MLA from the Hisar seat. Back in 2005, she represented Hisar in the Haryana Assembly for the first time as a Congress MLA. In 2009, she was reelected from the seat and was made a Cabinet Minister in the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government in 2013.

    Savitri Jindal’s Political and Entrepreneur Journey 

    She left Congress earlier in March 2024, when her son also left the party and later joined the BJP. Savitri Jindal is a prominent Indian Businesswoman and politician. She is also the chairperson of the OP Jindal Group, a major steel and power conglomerate. It was founded by her husband, Om Prakash Jindal. In June 2024, her family’s net worth was estimated at $40 billion, placing her as India’s 4th richest woman.

    Additionally, in the previous cabinet, Savitri has also served as the Minister of State for Revenue and Disaster Management, Consolidation, Rehabilitation and Housing, also the Minister of State for Urban Local bodies and Housing.

    Her Company’s revenue increased rapidly, after she took over OP Jindal Group. Emerging with a background and history from the state of Haryana. She served as a member of the Haryana Legislative Assembly and held the office as the Minister of power till 2010.

    OP Jindal Group, leading producers of Steel in India 

    The OP Jindal group was started by OP Jindal and the late husband of Savitri Jindal in 1952 who was an engineer by profession. The company developed into an oil, gas, mining steel and power giant. Today its India’s third largest steel production. Her four sons, Prithviraj, Sajjan, Ratan and Naveen Jindal oversee each of the four business sectors.
