Delhi Assembly Elections 2025: What Are Exit Polls and Where to Watch Them?

    Read Later

As Delhi votes in the crucial 2025 Assembly elections, the political atmosphere is charged with anticipation. With over 1.5 crore eligible voters deciding the future of the national capital, the results will be officially declared in three days. However, exit polls—survey-based predictions conducted immediately after voters leave polling booths—will offer early indications of potential outcomes.

    What Are Exit Polls?

Exit polls are surveys conducted outside polling stations to estimate election results before the official count. By asking voters whom they supported, pollsters attempt to forecast seat distribution and party performance. While not always accurate, exit polls provide an early snapshot of electoral trends.

When and Where to Watch the Exit Polls?

As per the Election Commission’s directive, exit poll results will be released only after 6:30 PM on February 5, following the completion of voting. Before this time, publishing or broadcasting exit polls is prohibited under Section 126A(1) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

Exit polls will be streamed live on various news channels, social media platforms, and YouTube channels after 6:30 PM. Prominent networks such as NDTV, Times Now, India Today, and Republic TV are expected to provide extensive coverage.

Context Behind the 2025 Delhi Assembly Elections

This election is a high-stakes battle, with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) seeking to secure a third consecutive term. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) aims to end its 30-year drought in Delhi’s assembly elections, while the Congress hopes for a comeback after a decade-long absence from power.

AAP chief and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal faces BJP’s Parvesh Verma and Congress’s Sandeep Dikshit in the New Delhi constituency. CM Atishi takes on BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri and Congress’s Alka Lamba in Kalkaji.

    Campaign Promises of Major Parties

AAP pledges to continue and expand welfare schemes, including free electricity, water, bus travel for women, and enhanced healthcare and education.

BJP proposes new initiatives such as a Rs 2,500 monthly stipend for women, increased pensions, and subsidized gas cylinders.

Congress aims to attract voters with promises like Rs 8,500 per month for unemployed youth, Rs 2,500 per month for women, and zero electricity bills for low consumers.

    Past Exit Poll Accuracy

Exit polls have had mixed accuracy in previous Delhi elections:

2013: Overestimated BJP’s performance while underestimating AAP’s surge.

2015: No poll predicted AAP’s massive 67-seat victory.

2020: Polls improved in accuracy, closely predicting AAP’s 62-seat win.

Party-Wise Vote and Seat Share in Past Elections

As per reports from TOI, in the 2013 elections, AAP secured 40% of the vote share, winning 28 seats, while BJP led with 44.3% and 32 seats. Congress trailed with 11.4% of the vote and secured only 8 seats.

The 2015 elections saw AAP making a sweeping victory with 54.3% of the votes, securing 67 seats, while BJP managed only 3 seats with 32.2% of the votes. Congress failed to win any seats, securing 9.7% of the vote share.

In 2020, AAP maintained its dominance with 53.6% of the vote share, winning 62 seats, while BJP increased its tally to 8 seats with 38.5% of the votes. Congress continued its decline, securing just 4.26% of the vote and failing to win any seats

With the voting process underway, all eyes will be on the exit polls to gauge the mood of Delhi’s electorate. However, the final results on the counting day, February 8, will determine the true winner of the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections.
