As per an official press release, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi received a telephone call from the Prime Minister of Greece, H.E. Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis. He warmly congratulated PM Modi on his re-election following the general elections in India.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis is a Greek politician currently serving as the prime minister of Greece since July 2019, except for a month between May and June 2023. Born March 4, 1968, Athens, Greece; he is a Greek politician and scion of one of Greece’s most prominent political families. His father, Konstantinos Mitsotakis, had served as prime minister from 1990 to 1993. His sister, Dora Bakoyannis, had been the mayor of Athens when it hosted the 2004 Olympic Games, and her son, Costas Bakoyannis (Mitsotakis’s nephew), became mayor of Athens in 2019. Moreover, Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s grandfather and great-grandfather were members of the Greek parliament, and the most prominent Greek politician and statesman of the early 20th century, Eleuthérios Venizélos, was his granduncle.

Indian and Greek leaders appreciated the momentum generated in bilateral ties through recent high-level exchanges and reiterated their firm commitment to further strengthen India-Greece Strategic Partnership.

Both reviewed progress in a number of areas of bilateral cooperation, including trade, defense, shipping and connectivity, in follow-up to PM Mitsotakis’s visit to India earlier this year.

The two leaders also exchanged views on various regional and global issues of interest, including IMEEC and developments in West Asia.

The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) is a planned economic corridor that aims to strengthen economic development by promoting connectivity and economic integration between Asia, the Persian Gulf and Europe.

‘IMEEC’ is an important initiative that can add to India’s maritime security and faster movement of goods between Europe and Asia. It is expected to provide a boost to key railway and port infrastructure companies like Ircon International, Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), Larsen & Toubro (L&T), Tata Projects, and GMR.

Ports on the western coast of India, such as state-owned Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (Navi Mumbai) and Deendayal Port Authority (Kandla), the Adani group-owned Mundra Port, and APM Terminals-owned Pipavav Port, also have the potential to benefit immensely from this corridor.

The two leaders agreed to remain in touch.

On X, PM Modi has messaged: “Yesterday, had a productive conversation with PM @kmitsotakis, reaffirming our shared commitment to strengthening the India-Greece Strategic Partnership. Together, we aim to deepen our collaboration across trade, defense, shipping and connectivity. Greece is a valued partner for India within the EU as well.”

Greece is a country in southern Europe with a long coastline on the Mediterranean Sea. It is bordered by Albania, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Turkey. It is one of the oldest civilizations in the world and is considered the cradle of Western civilization. It is the birthplace of democracy, philosophy, theater, and the Olympic Games.
