Flying kites during the Indian festival of Makar Sankranti has been an old-age tradition. Over the years, this pastime has evolved significantly and even took a competitive turn. However, with the emerging trend, the use of kite-flying threads has also grown from traditional cotton to nylon or synthetic ones. This is popularly called the Chinese Manja or Nylon Manja.

During the kite-flying events, the kite flyers often seek these thick nylon strings that can easily cut othersโ€™ kites when engaged in a mid-air duel. But do you know, this thick nylon manja can also lead to someoneโ€™s death? For an instance, in a recent turn of events, a nylon manja has claimed three lives and left a policeman fighting for his life in a hospital on Tuesday, January 14, 2024, amidst the Makar Sankranti celebrations.

Additionally, it has also caused deaths following the frenzied chase to catch drifting kites.

Instances Took Place in Maharashtra

In Nandurbar district of Maharashtra, a suspended manja slit the throat of seven-year-old Kartik Gorve. He succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

Sonu Dhotre, 23, was riding a bike in Nashik when his throat was slit by a nylon manja. He fell from his bike in a bleeding state. He was declared dead at the civil hospital.

In the wake of these incidents, another similar incident came to light, where sub-inspector Deepak Parde, 41, suffered from serious throat injuries after a piece of nylon manja cut deep into his neck. The incident took place at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Following the incident, he has been admitted to a private hospital and sustained 30 stitches.

In Akola district of Maharashtra, Kira Sonwane died after his throat was slit by the nylon manja. He was riding a bike when the manja got tangled around his neck and injured his windpipe. He collapsed on the spot and was later pronounced dead.

In another incident, a seven-year-old from Nandurbar district got severely injured after a nylon manja wrapped around his neck. He was reportedly sitting with his grandfather, who was riding a two-wheeler when the incident happened.

In Pune city, a two-wheeler rider, identified as Devaram Dattaray Kamthe, 67, sustained injuries after being struck by the nylon manja. Two additional daily wage earners were injured by Manja; one of them sustained injuries to the neck and the other to his hand.
