In early 2025, the YouTube show 'India's Got Latent' of the time attracted nationwide controversy and outrage when a contestant was posed an inappropriate question by YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia (BeerBiceps), in one of the episodes of the show. The event caused outrage throughout India, and led to multiple FIRs against Allahbadia, the show's host Samay Raina, and other members of the panel, such as Ashish Chanchlani and Apoorva Mukhija, among others.
The fallout was swift and severe. The Maharashtra Cyber Department filed an FIR against the show's team, invoking relevant sections of the IT Act and pushing for the removal of all 18 episodes. Public figures and celebrities, including Boney Kapoor, criticized the show's content, calling for self-censorship and expressing disapproval of the remarks made.
Amid the controversy, Samay Raina removed all 'India's Got Latent' videos from his channel, stating, "Everything that is happening has been too much for me to handle. I have removed all India's Got Latent videos from my channel. My only objective was to make people laugh and have a good time. I will fully cooperate with all agencies to ensure their inquiries are concluded fairly. Thank you."
During a recent Instagram 'Ask Me Anything' session,Ranveer Allahbadia spoke frankly about the effect of the controversy on him and his life. When asked about the effects, he responded:
"Lost: Health, money, opportunity, repute, mental health, peace, parents' contentment & much more. Gained: Transformation, spiritual growth, toughness. Will slowly work towards getting back everything that's lost. Let the work speak."
This was the first time Ranveer openly mentioned everything that he had lost because of the backlash. But he also spoke about how he has grown spiritually and emotionally during this tough time.
Despite the challenges, Allahbadia emphasized the strengthened relationships with his fellow creators. When questioned about his connection with Samay Raina, he affirmed:
"Samay will be back. All of us have gotten closer after the events. Stand by each other in good times as well as in bad times. My brother is (already) a media legend. God is watching over all of us. Just wanna say, love you Ashish Chanchlani & The Rebel Kid as well. Picture abhi baaki hai."
His words were filled with warmth and support for Samay Raina, Ashish Chanchlani, and Apoorva Mukhija (The Rebel Kid), all of whom were on the panel during the controversial episode of Latent.
The controversy around 'India's Got Latent' has initiated conversations about the limits of comedy and the obligations of digital content creators. Although the legal matter is still ongoing, the event highlights the blurred line between humor and offense in the age of digital content.
While the future of 'India's Got Latent' remains in the air, the support and collaboration exhibited among the creators indicates a commitment to grow stronger from the experience and continue moving forward in a meaningful way.
