Sandeep Reveals Why Bobby is Deaf and Mute in ‘Animal’

Sandeep Reddy Vanga is one of the most talked-about directors in contemporary Indian cinema. He has received both praise and criticism for his unique storytelling and character portrayals. His films often feature dominant male protagonists, which has sparked debates aboutgenderrepresentation on screen. While many critics and audiences have pointed out the apparent misogynistic elements in his films, Sandeep remains steadfast in defending his creative choices. He continues to make films in his distinct style, regardless of the polarized reception.

One of his most recent and widely discussed films, Animal, further cemented his reputation as a filmmaker who doesnt shy away from pushing boundaries. The movie not only sparked discussions on its violent and intense narrative but also played a crucial role in reviving Bobby Deols career, thanks to his unconventional portrayal of a villain.

Bobby Deol’s Comeback as an Unconventional Villain

Bobby Deol, who had been away from mainstream success for a while, found himself back in the limelight with his role as the antagonist in Animal. Sharing screen space withRanbir Kapoor, Bobby delivered a performance that stood out for its uniqueness and intensity. His character, Abrar Haque, was portrayed as a deaf and mute villain, a depiction rarely seen in mainstream cinema.

Despite Animal receiving various criticisms, Bobbys role became one of the film’s biggest highlights. Playing a silent yet menacing villain, he impressed both audiences and critics alike. His portrayal of Abrar Haque was hailed as one of the most unconventional depictions of an antagonist in Indian cinema. The decision to make the villain hearing- and speech-impaired added a new layer to the storytelling and helped Bobby deliver a performance that resonated strongly with viewers.

Why Was the Villain in Animal Deaf and Mute?

Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga shared insights into his creative decision regarding Bobby Deols character. In a conversation with film critic Komal Nahta, he explained the thought process behind making the villain deaf and mute.

“We have seen numerous films where the hero and villain engage in verbal spats over the phone, exchanging dramatic dialogues throughout the film. I wanted to break away from that clich,” Sandeep remarked.

The director further explained that Bobbys character was introduced much later in the film, after the first half, which primarily focused on developing Ranbir Kapoors character, Ranvijay Singh. Bobbys entry was accompanied by the song Jamal Kudu, which quickly became a fan favorite. Sandeep found the idea of a deaf-and-mute villain engaging in a high-stakes action-packed climax incredibly exciting, and he believed it added a fresh perspective to the film.

Animal: A Violent Yet Successful Box Office Hit

Released in December 2023, Animal featured a stellar cast, including Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, and Bobby Deol. The film, while being heavily criticized for its extreme violence and perceived misogynistic undertones, emerged as a massive box office success. It grossed approximately Rs 915 crore worldwide, proving that Sandeep Reddy Vangas storytelling, despite its controversial elements, had a strong audience base.

The film follows the journey of Ranvijay Singh (played by Ranbir Kapoor), the son of a powerful industrialist, Balbir Singh (played by Anil Kapoor). Their strained father-son relationship takes a dark turn when an assassination attempt on Balbir triggers Ranvijays descent into violence and vengeance.
