Amid the nationwide outrage from the horrific rape and murder case of 31-year-old Doctor trainee at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital, comes another shocking incident. At least 13 girls were sexually abused, including one of them raped at a fake NCC Camp held at Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri.
Fake NCC Camp in Tamil Nadu
Reportedly, a private school in Krishnagiri organized a week-long NCC camp for students when a group approached them that conducting such a camp would qualify the students for NCC unit. However, the school failed to conduct background checks on the group.
More than 40 students, including 17 girls participated in the camp, held earlier this month. The girls were accommodated on the first floor in the school auditorium, while the boys were housed on the ground floor, with no teacher assigned for super vision in the camp.
The girls alleged that a man named, Sivaraman and another NCC officer, Sudhankar who lured them outside in the night and abused them. The suspect, named Sivraman also assaulted a 13-year-old girl in class VIII on the same night.
School’s Response and Attempted Cover-Up
Meanwhile, when the girl told the principal about the incident, he hushed the matter and urged her to stay silent. After the camp concluded, the girl returned home but her condition worsened. On a visit to the hospital on August 16, the girl told her parents about what happened. The parents reported the incident to the police.
The Bargur Police initiated the investigation and found that the suspect has harassed more girls in the camp. The Police has further arrested 7 seven individuals linked to the case, involving a School correspondent, Principal and five others for trying to hush the matter. They have been detained under the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Moreover, the Police are looking out for Sivaraman, and another NCC officer. The probe is also on whether the group has conducted similar camps in other schools.
The Superintendent of Police, P Thangadurai said “The school authorities were aware of the sexual offences but chose to suppress the matter instead of informing the police. The students were allegedly instructed to not take it seriously.”
