    36-year-old British Woman Raped in Delhi. Crimes against Foreigners on the Rise?

    A British national has been allegedly raped in Mahipalpur, New Delhi. The woman had come to meet up with an Instagram friend. She is said to have been molested by the housekeeping staff of the hotel too where she was living, another suspect is the Instagram friend of the victim. According to police, “This is not a gang rape. These are two separate incidents of sexual abuse. The suspects are not related to each other,” as told to The Independent.

    Two Suspects

    The woman had arrived in the country for holiday in Maharashtra and Goa when she asked the Instagram friend named Kailash to join her on the trip. Kailash prompted her to visit New Delhi. The friend allegedly visited the victim on Tuesday when she checked into a hotel in the capital, and as woman realized that the friend was trying to assault her it escalated into an argument and Kailash allegedly raped her.

    This Instagram friend, Kailash, is said to be living in Mayur Vihar, East Delhi. With a hobby of making Instagram reels, he connected to the British woman. Kailash, who was supposedly texting the British woman using a translator tool, was invited by the victim on her Indian holiday. Kailash showing inability to come, asked the victim to come to New Delhi.

    Another suspect is reported to be a hotel staff member named Gulfaam, who allegedly touched the victim inappropriately in the elevator while she was trying to reach the hotel reception after being reportedly raped by her friend. The staff member, under the guise of helping her, touched her inappropriately, according to the police complaint. 

    The arrest

    Delhi police said in their statement, “A man was arrested on charges of rape of a British woman in a Mahipalpur hotel in Delhi. His accomplice was arrested on charges of molestation. The woman who was friends with the man through social media had come to Delhi from the UK to meet him,” The authorities have also informed the British High Commission about the incident, and the investigation is underway.

    Cases Of Violent Crimes Against Foreign Women in India

    There have been many violent cases against women in India, as a prominent issue where the police have recorded 31,516 rape cases in 2022. The foreign women also suffer from similar crimes, whether they have come here for holidays or other purposes.

    A week ago, an Israeli and a local woman were sexually assaulted by three men who were asking money from them and other three male travellers came to the site for stargazing in Koppal, Karnataka. The males were pushed into the nearby canal before both women were sexually assaulted.

    A student from Lesotho was allegedly raped by a fellow student from South Sudan last year at Dehradun University. Additionally, a case of 2017 has been recently registered in March 2023, where a polish woman named Danielle McLaughlin was raped and murdered by a man who was victim’s friend in during her time in India.

    These cases highlight the safety challenges in India, the tourist safety in India needs to be refined by not only judicial measures but cultural and institutional reforms for creating secure environments for visitors.
