Eyewitness Accounts and CCTV Footage
Eyewitnesses captured disturbing footage of the accident, which showed Chaurasiaโs friend, the carโs co-driver and owner, exiting the vehicle and immediately attempting to shift the blame onto Chaurasia, a native of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Another video surfaced showing Chaurasia shouting โAnother round? Another round?โโraising strong suspicions that he may have been intoxicated at the time of the accident. Bystanders at the scene, angered by the tragedy, reportedly thrashed Chaurasia before he was taken into police custody.
CCTV footage later accessed by the media revealed the chilling sequence of events, depicting the speeding car colliding with two scooters, knocking the riders down, and dragging them along before finally coming to a halt.
Chaurasia Expresses Regret but Denies Drunk Driving
In his controversial media interaction, Chaurasia expressed remorse for the accident, calling his apology an understatement. โI ruined someoneโs life,โ he admitted, stating that he wished to meet the family of the deceased to personally apologize, although he acknowledged that โsorry is a very small word.โ
Providing his version of events, Chaurasia explained that he lost control of the vehicle due to panic. โThe car was automaticโฆ when the airbags opened, I panicked and pressed the accelerator instead of the brakes,โ he claimed. However, when questioned about the name, he was heard shouting upon exiting the vehicle, he dismissed it as a random utterance made in a state of panic. Additionally, he denied allegations that he had been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Panna Momaya commented on the case, confirming that the vehicle was overspeeding. She stated, โThis can also be a case of drunk driving. We will conduct a medical test to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol.โ Momaya also confirmed that Chaurasia does possess a valid driving license.
Social Media Outrage Over Media Interaction
Chaurasiaโs ability to give an interview while in police custody sparked widespread condemnation on social media. Users questioned how an accused individual accused in such a serious crime, could hold what seemed like a press conference.
A user named Tanmoy wrote on X (formerly Twitter), โIs he now released from police custody? A brutal crime accused is holding a press meet.โ He further questioned, โAnd even if he is not released, the same question remainsโwho permitted to hold a press meet for an accused?โ
Another user compared the incident to the recent Pune hit-and-run case, where a juvenile court released the teenage accused with the condition of writing an essay on road safety. โThis is very shocking. Police arrested and released Rakshit Ravish Chaurasia. He is studying law at MS University, killed one woman & injured seven others after crashing his car into multiple two-wheelers. Looks like an essay is downloading,โ read the post.
Public Demands Justice
As outrage continues to build, demands for strict legal action against Chaurasia are growing louder. Many social media users are urging authorities to ensure a fair and transparent investigation, particularly in light of concerns over potential leniency due to his background as a law student. With public sentiment running high, all eyes are now on law enforcement and the judicial system to deliver justice for the victims of this tragic accident.
