    Read Later

Norman Gilbert Pritchard, known as Norman Trevor, was a pioneering figure in Indian sports and cinema. Born on 23 June 1875 in Calcutta (now Kolkata), he was the first Indian athlete to compete in the Olympic Games and win a medal.

Pritchard’s athletic prowess was evident early in his life. He excelled in sprinting and hurdles, dominating the Bengal province championships during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His achievements culminated at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, where he represented India. Pritchard captured two silver medals, finishing second in both the 200 meters and 200 meters hurdles events. He also competed in the 110 meters hurdles, reaching the final although not finishing, and participated in the 60 meters and 100 meters sprints.

Interestingly, there has been a historical debate regarding Pritchard’s representation at the Olympics. While he initially competed for Great Britain in the 1900 British AAA championship, he ultimately represented India at the Olympics, marking a significant milestone as the first Asian-born athlete to win an Olympic medal.

Beyond his athletic achievements, Pritchard was a multifaceted individual. He studied at St. Xavier’s College in Calcutta and excelled in football. He scored the first hat-trick in an open football tournament in India. He also served as Secretary of the Indian Football Association from 1900 to 1902. This role underscored his deep involvement in sports administration in India.

Following his Olympic success, Pritchard ventured into acting, relocating to the United States and becoming one of the first Olympians to grace the silent Hollywood screen under the pseudonym Norman Trevor. His transition to acting underscored his versatility and ambition beyond the realm of sports.

Tragically, Norman Gilbert Pritchard passed away on 30 October 1929 in Los Angeles due to a brain malady. His legacy, however, lives on as a trailblazer who shattered barriers for Indian athletes and set a precedent for representation in international sporting arenas.

Norman Gilbert Pritchard is a revered figure in Indian sports and early Hollywood cinema. He is remembered for his pioneering spirit and remarkable achievements both on and off the field.
