Star Indian batter Virat Kohli has reached Perth ahead of the rest of the teammates for the blockbuster Border-Gavaskar Trophy Series in Perth, Australia, from Friday, November 22, 2024, onwards. He is the first Indian batter to fly down to the nation two weeks prior to the series on Sunday evening.
About the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test Series in Perth
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test Cricket Series is played between India and Australia. This series is named after legendary captains Allan Border of Australia and Sunil Gavaskar of India. This is one of the most anticipated cricket rivalries over the years.
The sources said that Virat Kohli has reached Perth before the two matches. One batch of players is already on their way, and the second batch leaves today. Notably, on Saturday evening, November 9, 2024, Kohli was spotted with his family at the Mumbai Airport. He obliged his fans with selfies and autographs before making his way to the airport.
The video of his arrival at the airport with wife Anushka Sharma and kids has gone viral on social media. In the video, he is seen urging the Paparazzi to avoid taking pictures of his children.
The first batch of Indian Cricket players, including Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Washington Sundar, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, are among the players who reached Australia on Sunday via a connecting flight from Singapore to Perth. While cricketers like Ravi Chandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, and other coaching staff members are expected to travel today.
Captain Rohit Sharma Likely to Miss Border-Gavaskar Trophy Series?
However, it remains unknown whether Indian Captain Rohit Sharma is traveling with the remaining players in the two batches. The earlier reports have claimed that the Indian captain is likely to miss out on the match for the impending birth of his second child. While the Head Coach, Gautam Gambhir, has previously reported about his departure from Mumbai on Monday.
“We will let you know exactly what the situation will be. Hopefully, he’s going to be available, but everything we’re going to get to know at the start of the series,” said Gambhir.
Further, he also informed that if Rohit Sharma remains absent from the series, Jasprit Bumrah, who is also his deputy for the series, will lead the India team in Perth. However, the management will further decide whether to opt for KL Rahul and Abhimanyu Easwaran to replace the 37-year-old in the opening role.
“There are options there; it’s not that there are no options there. There are quite a few options in the squad,” Gautam Gambhir stated.
“Once it gets closer to the first Test match, we’ll plan and play the best playing XI that’s going to do the job for us. (Jasprit) Bumrah is the vice-captain, so obviously he will lead India if Rohit is not available,” he further added.
Virat Kohli’s Recent Performances
Additionally, the former Indian captain Virat Kohli has been experiencing a challenging phase, especially in the longest formats.
In his recent innings in the New Zealand Test Series held in October and November 2024, Kohli has only managed to score 93 runs across three matches with an average of 15.50. This breakthrough performance has left the fans and analysts questioning his low performances.
There were multiple factors, which are held responsible for affecting his overall performances. Kohli has been having trouble with his defensive technique. The left-arm spinners have continuously troubled him from scoring runs. This led to several dismissals, where he was caught and bowled out.
As India is heading towards the highly anticipated series against Australia, the concerns about Kohli’s performance will be there. Fans across the country are eagerly waiting to see whether Kohli will be able to make a successive comeback this time!
