“To create a sustainable future, we must democratize transportation.” This powerful statement greets visitors to the “We, Robot” section of Tesla’s official website, setting the tone for the company’s ambitious vision. Elon Musk first floated the idea of launching a robotaxi network using autonomous Teslas in 2019, with an expected deployment the following year. Five years later, Tesla finally revealed its Robotaxi at the “We, Robot” event at the Warner Bros Studio in Hollywood.
Musk announced that the rollout of fully autonomous, unsupervised driving will commence in Texas and California with the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y next year. This paved the way for the eventual introduction of the Robotaxi, which Musk also referred to as the Cybercab throughout the event. Musk, known for his optimistic timelines, stated, “We expect to be in production with the Cybercab, which is really highly optimized for autonomous transport in probably, well, I tend to be a little optimistic with time frames, but in 2026. The Cybercab

Tesla aims to start production of the Cybercab by 2026, with a price tag of under $30,000. The vehicle will use wireless induction technology for charging and is expected to begin unsupervised full self-driving trials in Texas and California next year.
The Robovan
Alongside the Cybercab, Tesla unveiled the Robovan, a larger autonomous vehicle designed to transport up to 20 people or a significant amount of cargo. FSD, part of a monthly subscription for Tesla owners, requires drivers to be ready to intervene at any moment. Both FSD and Autopilot have faced scrutiny, with California’s Department of Motor Vehicles accusing Tesla of false advertising and the Department of Justice launching a criminal investigation after several crashes involving Tesla vehicles.
Musk remains optimistic about the future of autonomous vehicles, touting their potential to save lives and prevent injuries. “It’ll save lives, like a lot of lives, and prevent injuries,” Musk said. “I think we’ll see autonomous cars become 10 times safer than a human.”
The Tesla Bot
