In a Digital Arrest, fraudsters claim themselves as officials from different government agencies or law enforcement organizations like CBI, Narcotics, TRAI, RBI, customs, and tax authorities. They typically initiate contact by calling the victim, using intimidation tactics to extort money. Victims are often kept in one location, usually their homes, under the false claim that they have been ‘arrested’.

The fraudsters called the techie, alleging that his Aadhaar number was associated with a money laundering investigation. Using fear and deception, they convinced him to stay on WhatsApp video call and cut off communication with his family. The cybercriminals also directed him to check into a lodge in Ameerpet, keeping the video call active the entire time.

How Did Scammers Use Psychological Manipulation in this Case?

The scammers on the video call repeatedly threatened the techie with arrest and potential legal issues for his family if he didn’t comply with their demands. This psychological manipulation kept him under their influence, as he feared serious consequences if he disobeyed.

The techie’s ordeal continued until around 4 AM on Sunday when the video call finally ended. Taking advantage of this moment, he immediately contacted the Hyderabad cybercrime helpline for help. Cybercrime officials quickly intervened, ensuring his safety and ending the digital arrest.
