    Background of Foldable Smartphones

The concept of a foldable smartphone isn’t entirely new. It can be traced back to the 1928 novella Armageddon 2419 A.D., which inspired the Flix phones that we are familiar with today.

The Motorola StarTAC was the first real flip phone introduced in 1966, but its craze declined among people in the late 2010s with the rise of traditional smartphones.

Currently, some smartphone manufacturers like Samsung, Microsoft, and Huawei are revitalizing this technology. They are incorporating sophisticated folding glass that merges touch functionality with a foldable structure. This innovation has led to more durable and visually appealing devices, departing from the previous plastic versions.

Consequently, Huawei officially announced the launch of the world’s first tri-fold smartphone on September 10, 2024.

What Are the Benefits of Dual Screens?

One of the main advantages of the foldable smartphones is their dual-screen functionality. The ability to run multiple apps simultaneously enhances productivity.

Meanwhile, Microsoft emphasized that multitasking side-by-side lessens the mental strain associated with managing different apps. Additionally, the dual screen space can facilitate the completion of quick tasks without the need to pull out a tablet or laptop.

What are the Pros and Cons of Foldable Smartphones?

    Pros:

    Larger Display

One of the primary attractions of foldable smartphones is its generous display area. Users often appreciate how the larger screen improves their overall experience, particularly for gaming and watching videos.

    Cool Factor

These devices are undeniably trendy and look cool while using. The unique action of folding and unfolding these smartphones captivates numerous users, especially younger generations.

    Cons:

    Durability Issues

Foldable smartphones such as Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 are not as durable as traditional smartphones. The water resistance ratings of IPX8 are lower than those of many bar-style smartphones, and users are concerned about dropping them.

    The Crease

Unlike traditional phones, foldable devices have visible creases where they bend. While not a significant drawback, can impact the user experience.

    Thickness and Weight

Foldable smartphones tend to be thicker and heavier than standard smartphones, making them less comfortable to hold. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is almost double the thickness of the iPhone 13 Pro Max when closed.

    High Prices

The price of foldable smartphones can be quite high, especially when compared to high-quality traditional smartphones that are available at lower prices.

As technology continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how foldable smartphones will adapt to meet consumer demands and if they can genuinely compete with conventional smartphones.
