Thailand has made history by becoming the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. The newly signed marriage equality bill, which received royal approval is scheduled to come into effect on 22 January 2025. This important development marks the culmination of years of activism and advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights in the region.
The same-sex marriage equality bill successfully passed through the Senate in June but needed royal approval to be enacted. Its announcement in the Royal Gazette marks a major advancement for LGBTQ+ rights in Thailand.
Thailand is often seen as a haven for the community in a region where acceptance is generally limited. Activists have hailed this development as a historic achievement, emphasizing the extensive efforts and advocacy that contributed to this achievement.
The recent same-sex marriage equality bill brings about transformative changes that uphold the rights and dignity of LGBTQ+ individuals. Below are the key features of the bill:
The bill replaced traditional terms like Husband and Wife with inclusive alternatives such as partner. This modification is designed to foster a more equitable legal framework that respects all types of relationships, regardless of gender.
Same-sex couples are now entitled to a range of essential legal rights which include:
Ann Chumaporn, a veteran LGBTQ+ activist and co-founder of the Bangkok Pride movement, emphasized that this bill represents more than just legal acknowledgment. He added, It is a powerful celebration of love and human dignity that affirms the value of LGBTQ+ individuals.
To commemorate the bills implementation, a grand mass wedding event is being planned for over 1,000 LGBTQ+ couples. This celebratory occasion aims to symbolize unity and joy within the community. The occasion showcases the love among couples who can now legally marry.
The new bill is expected to influence societal perception significantly, encouraging greater acceptance of LGBTQ+ relationships across Thailand. By legally recognizing same-sex marriage, the bill reinforces Thailands reputation as a progressive and relatively safe haven for LGBTQ+ rights in a region where such acceptance is still emerging.
The LGBTQ+ community in Thailand has expressed immense happiness and relief following the legislative victory. Kwankaow Koosakulnirund, an advertising strategist noted that this bill means full acceptance and allows individuals to live their lives without conditions.
Siritata Ninlapruek, another activist shared her excitement after fighting for over a decade for this change. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra took to social media to celebrate the bill.
Congratulations on everyones love. #LoveWins

With this new bill, Thailand joins Taiwan and Nepal as the only places in Asia where same-sex marriage is legally recognized. Taiwan was the first in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage in 2019, while Nepal registered its first same-sex marriage in November 2022. In comparison, countries like India and Singapore have taken steps towards LGBTQ+ rights but have not yet granted full legal recognition to same-sex marriage.
The approval of the same-sex marriage bill indicated a growing support for LGBTQ+ rights within Thailands political arena. Former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and other political leaders have voiced their support, labeling the bill as a Historic Equal Marriage Bill towards achieving equality.
Danuphorn Punnakanta, an MP took to social media and celebrated the same-sex marriage bill, stating, Because of everyones efforts and cooperation, equal marriage has been achieved today.
