Air India Cancels 60 Flights to the US Amid Aircraft Shortages

    Read Later

As the Winter Season sets, Air India, India’s largest airline owned by Tata Group has called off about 60 flights with routes connecting India to USA. These cancelled flights were reportedly scheduled for the busiest month of November and December including its services to San Francisco, Chicago and some others.

According to the airline, these flights have been canceled due to delays in return of aircraft from maintenance and supply chain constraints, without naming the destinations. These issues have been causing a shortage of operational aircraft, making it difficult for the airline to schedule services accordingly during these busy months of November and December.

Meanwhile, the airline also said that affected customers have been informed and offered other transits on other Air India group services, which were operating on the same or adjacent days.

“Air India has cancelled some 60 flights to and from San Francisco, Washington, Chicago, Newark and New York between November 15 and December 31. As it doesn’t have adequate body aircraft to operate some flights from and to these destinations”, the sources said.

    Cancelled Flights from India-USA

Air India has called off a total of 14 flights from Delhi to Chicago, 28 flights from Delhi-Washington route, 12 flights from the Delhi-San Francisco route, 4 flights on the Mumbai-New York route and 2 flights from Delhi-Newark route.

Keeping the passengers updated about the alteration in the schedule, the airline has sent mails to the affected passengers stating that they can either reschedule their travel on the Air India group flights on the same or the nearest date or get a refund.

    Air India Facing Technical Issues?

Meanwhile the airline informed that it is facing some delays in getting aircraft from the MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Operations) operator it has sent the flights for maintenance. While some of the wide-body planes were also grounded due to technical issues. This has caused a shortage of aircrafts leading to flight cancellations.

The Air India Spokesperson, said, “Due to delayed return of some aircraft from heavy maintenance and supply chain constraints resulting in a temporary reduction in operating fleet, the airline regrets that a small number of flights have been cancelled between now and end of December.”

The affected customers have been informed and were given the option to fly on other services of the Air India group on the same or the following days, or opt for a free change of date or any amount refund.

“Air India sincerely regrets for causing inconvenience caused by this constraint beyond our control”, the spokesperson added.

This is to be noted that the cancellation of flights by Air India is happening in a time when everyone is eager to travel by airline due to the festive season. This is causing maximum inconvenience for passengers who have planned to travel US. The airline has ensured the passengers that it will work to address maintenance challenges that had caused disruptions to the flights.

They all have urged the passengers to contact the concerned Air India customer service as well as to know about their flight schedule.
