    Read Later

An Embraer 190 aircraft operated by Azerbaijan Airlines crashed near the Kazakh city of Aktau, resulting in the deaths of 38 individuals, with dozens of survivors emerging from the wreckage. The flight, designated J2-8243, was en route from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Grozny in Russia’s North Caucasus region when the tragedy unfolded.

    Crash Details and Survivors

The plane, carrying 67 passengers and crew, took off from Baku at 03:55 GMT on Wednesday. Approximately two and a half hours later, it attempted an emergency landing 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) from Aktau. The attempt ended in disaster as the aircraft caught fire and crashed. Mobile phone footage circulating online shows the Embraer 190 descending steeply with its landing gear deployed before smashing into the ground in a fiery explosion. Additional videos depict the fuselage torn apart, with parts of the plane lying inverted in the grass. Survivors, some visibly injured, were seen crawling out of the wreckage.

Despite the devastation, local officials confirmed that dozens of people survived. Emergency services responded promptly, and the injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

    Ongoing Investigation

Kazakh and Azerbaijani authorities are investigating the crash. The flight data recorder has been recovered, which is expected to provide crucial insights into the events leading up to the tragedy. Azerbaijan’s prosecutor general stated that “all possible scenarios” are being examined. Speculations range from mechanical failure to external factors such as a bird strike, as unconfirmed reports from Russian media suggest the aircraft may have collided with a flock of birds. Additionally, some air defense experts have posited that the crash could be linked to Russian air defense systems active near Grozny, though these claims remain unverified.

The Kremlin and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev emphasized that it is too early to draw definitive conclusions about the cause of the crash. Embraer, the Brazilian manufacturer of the Embraer 190, has a strong safety record, making this incident all the more shocking..

Videos shared on social media captured the horrifying moments leading up to and following the crash. One video showed the plane engulfed in flames upon impact, while another revealed passengers emerging from the wreckage amidst the debris. The authenticity of these videos has been corroborated by the matching colors and registration number of the aircraft.

In response to the crash, Azerbaijan Airlines announced the suspension of flights between Baku and the Russian cities of Grozny and Makhachkala pending further investigation. The airline expressed its condolences to the families of the victims and pledged full cooperation with authorities. The tragedy has drawn attention from international aviation experts and safety organizations. Embraer has offered its assistance to the investigation
