Can Surgery be DIY too? Mathura Man Rushed to Hospital after He Performs Self-Surgery through YouTube Tutorials

    Read Later

A 32-year-old Mathura man attempted to undergo self-surgery after months of inexplicable belly aches. Desperate after unsuccessful medical consultations, Raja Babu, an MBA graduate, took a dramatic turn—YouTube guides were his operating manual. The attempt at self-surgery quickly turned into a medical crisis and he was admitted to hospital.

    Self-Surgery Fiasco: What Went Wrong?

Raja Babu, who was a villager from Sunrakh near Mathura, had been suffering from recurring pain in the abdomen for four months. No appropriate diagnosis was offered as he visited many doctors and undertook medical tests. Desperate by then, he approached the internet for relief.

Having seen several videos on self-surgery on YouTube, he assembled basic medical equipment such as a knife, sedative injections, and plastic sutures and went ahead to attempt his self-surgery. He cut himself an incision one inch long on his abdomen and tried to insert an exploratory object into the area of pain. When he failed to extract anything from his belly, he sewed himself up using 11 stitches.

Before long, the ache grew intolerable, and he had no option but to see an expert. His family brought him to the local hospital, where physicians were stunned at his terrible state.

Physicians Stunned by the Extreme Behavior

The DIY surgery had made Raja Babu’s life in jeopardy due to the vulnerability to infection and internal issues. Doctors at the district hospital provided first aid but would not admit him, and he was referred immediately to SN Medical College in Agra for further care.

A surgeon at the district hospital disclosed that Raja Babu earlier had an appendicitis surgery done 15 years ago. His fresh self-inflicted wound reopened the old surgical wound and made his situation all the more dangerous. Medical experts believe that infection could have already spread, although the extent is unknown as yet.

Why He Took this Extreme Step?

Raja Babu said that he had consulted many doctors but was unable to get a clear diagnosis. He continued to have pain and was so anxious to learn what was wrong. Tired of the absence of medical logic, he chose to “diagnose” himself.

“I was in pain for months, and nobody could tell me what was wrong. I thought I would investigate myself,”

His theatrical act of opening his abdomen and trying to perform surgery highlights the risks of misinformation and the risks of making medical decisions based on untested online information.

The Hazards of DIY Medical Treatment

This is a poignant reminder of the way misinformation and desperation can lead individuals to perform extreme and unsafe acts. Due to the fact that there is a lot of medical information on sites such as YouTube, individuals feel they are able to do complex medical procedures by themselves.

Doctors, after the incident, claimed the importance of trusting medical practitioners and taking their advice or second opinions rather than seeking assistance from the internet while making any crucial medical decision.

Private hospital surgeon Dr. Rajesh Sharma commented:

“This is an extreme example of medical misinformation causing a life-threatening condition. Surgery involves years of training, sterilization, and post-surgery care. Trying it at home is not just risky but fatal.”

Another medical professional pointed out that Raja Babu’s case could have been fatal if his family had not acted in time. Chances of internal bleeding, organ injury, and septic shock were extremely high.
