Russian President Vladimir Putin has accepted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s invitation to visit India, and preparations for the visit are currently in progress, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed on Thursday.
Speaking in a video address at a conference titled “Russia and India: Toward a New Bilateral Agenda,” hosted by the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), Lavrov stated that arrangements for Putin’s visit are being made. According to Russia’s TASS news agency, Lavrov emphasized that the Russian President had accepted an invitation from the Indian Prime Minister and that the visit is in the planning stages.
Diplomatic Exchange Between India and Russia
Lavrov also highlighted the strong diplomatic ties between the two nations, referencing Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Russia in July 2024. He pointed out that this was Modi’s first foreign trip after being re-elected as India’s Prime Minister, underlining the significance of Indo-Russian relations. “Now it’s our turn,” Lavrov remarked, indicating that Putin’s visit would reciprocate Modi’s gesture.
Modi’s Visit to Russia in 2024
Prime Minister Modi visited Russia in July 2024, marking his first trip to the country in nearly five years. His last visit to Russia was in 2019 when he attended an economic conclave in Vladivostok, located in the country’s Far East. During his 2024 visit, Modi extended an invitation to President Putin to visit India, further strengthening the diplomatic ties between the two nations.
While the exact dates of Putin’s upcoming visit to India have not been disclosed yet, the confirmation of his acceptance signals continued engagement and cooperation between India and Russia on various strategic and economic fronts.
