What is DeepSeek? Chinese AI Chatbot Sparks Global Tech and Market Turmoil

The debut of DeepSeek, a Chinese AI-powered chatbot, has sent shockwaves through global markets and drawn pointed responses from tech giants and political leaders. Developed by the Hangzhou-based company DeepSeek, the app became the most downloaded free app on Apple’s store shortly after its January release in the United States. Its meteoric rise, combined with its reportedly lower operating costs compared to US-based competitors, has caused ripples across financial markets and raised questions about the future of AI innovation and investment.

Market Impact

The sudden popularity of DeepSeekoffering advanced AI capabilities at a fraction of the cost of its rivalstriggered a sharp sell-off in tech stocks. Major US AI chipmaker Nvidia saw its shares plummet by 16.9% at Mondays close, while its competitor Broadcom dropped by 17.4% according to some reports. Other tech heavyweights also suffered losses, with Microsoft declining 2.14% and Alphabet, Googles parent company, falling over 4%.

The impact extended beyond the US, with European companies also feeling the strain. Dutch semiconductor equipment maker ASMLs shares dropped by over 7%, while Siemens Energy, a key player in AI-related hardware, saw its stock plunge by 20%.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman however, had a more positive outlook, welcoming competition and promising to deliver even more impressive technology than presented by DeepSeek. We will obviously deliver much better models and also it’s legit invigorating to have a new competitor! we will pull up some releases, Altman said on X.

Trumps Reaction

Former President Donald Trump, now back in office, labeled the release of DeepSeek as a “wake-up call” for American industries. In a statement, he emphasized the need for the US to intensify its competitive edge in technology innovation.

The release of DeepSeek AI from a Chinese company should be a wake-up call for our industries that we should be laser-focused on competing to win, Trump said. We have the best scientists in the world. This is very unusual. We always have the ideas. Were always first.

Trump also acknowledged that the disruption caused by DeepSeek could yield positive results, potentially driving more cost-effective innovation. So instead of spending billions and billions, you’ll spend less, and you’ll come up with hopefully the same solution, he added.

DeepSeeks Strategy and Leadership

DeepSeeks success stems in part from the vision of its founder, Liang Wenfeng. The 40-year-old entrepreneur, who also established a hedge fund to back his AI venture, is a graduate of information and electronic engineering. By leveraging a cache of Nvidia A100 chipsnow banned from export to Chinaand pairing them with lower-cost alternatives still available for import, Liang was able to develop DeepSeek at a fraction of the cost of its competitors.

DeepSeeks pricing strategy has drawn particular attention. In a 2024 interview with The China Academy, Liang revealed that he never intended to be a disruptor in the way that has unfolded.

We didnt expect pricing to be such a sensitive issue. We were simply following our own pace, calculating costs, and setting prices accordingly. Our principle is neither to sell at a loss nor to seek excessive profits. The current pricing allows for a modest profit margin above our costs, he remarked.

Liangs prominence in the Chinese tech sector is further underscored by his participation in high-level meetings with industry experts and Premier Li Qiang.

Implications for US AI Dominance

DeepSeeks emergence raises significant questions about the future of US dominance in artificial intelligence. US firms, OpenAI, Softbank and Oracle earlier pledged to invest $500 billion in AI infrastructure, called the Stargate. However, the rapid ascent of DeepSeek underscores the challenges posed by low-cost competition from abroad.

Trump recently described the $500 billion initiative as “the largest AI infrastructure project by far in history,” intended to ensure that “the future of technology” remains firmly rooted in the United States.

Despite these efforts, DeepSeeks success highlights the necessity for US firms to adapt quickly. As Trump put it, the disruption from DeepSeek could serve as a “positive” catalyst for fostering innovation at reduced costs.
