In the middle of the Israel and Palestine war tensions, India promised to send humanitarian aid to the population of Palestine.
Today (October 22, 2024), India dispatched its first shipment to Palestine. The consignment includes 30 tons of necessary supplies, like medicines, surgical equipments, dental products, general medical supplies, and energy-boosting biscuits. The shipment will be sent via the United Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
Official Statement from MEA
The official spokesperson of the MEA (Ministry of External Affairs), Randhir Jaiswal shared the images on X. “India sends humanitarian assistance for the people of Palestine through UNRWA. The first tranche of assistance comprising 30 tons of medicine and food items has departed today. The consignment includes a wide range of essential medicines and surgical supplies, dental products, general medical items and high-energy biscuits,” the post noted.
A tranche of USD 2.5 million was given to the UNRWA, earlier in July. It was a part of its annual contribution of USD 5 million for the year 2024-25.
India also reaffirmed its firm and long-lasting will to resolve the Palestine conflict through peaceful means, supporting a negotiated “two-state solution” that seeks the formation of a “sovereign, independent, and viable” Palestinian state living peacefully with Israel.
Urgent Need for Humanitarian Aid to Palestine
Strikingly, the World Food Programme issued a warning for Northern Gaza, stating that WFP’s supplies are running low.
On October 12, WFP posted on X, “Escalating violence in northern #Gaza is having a disastrous impact on food security. No food aid has entered the north since 1 October. It is unclear how long WFP’s remaining food supplies in the north, already distributed to shelters and health facilities, will last.”
UNRWA also revealed that Gaza’s population is living in “inhumane” situations. That agency took to its social media platform X and asserted that loads of debris are compiling in Central Gaza. The sewage water is also leaking into the streets. The UN agency urged for an immediate ceasefire.
On October 20, reemphasizing its call to end the dispute, the United Nations underlined the immediate release of hostages, stop the relocation of Palestinians, and facilitate the unrestricted delivery of humanitarian assistance.
Conflict Between Israel and Palestine
The war in Gaza represents the most lethal stage of a seven-decade-long conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, resulting in continuous instability in the Middle East.
The recent few weeks have seen a significant uptick in a related conflict along with Israel’s border with Lebanon, where Hezbollah supported by Iran, asserts to be fighting for the Palestinians.
