    Can India Reduce the Alarming Rate of Road Accidents?

    The rising number of road accidents in India is a serious concern. In 2023, approximately 173,000 people died in road accidents across the country. Almost 55% of these deaths happened in only six major states: Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Rajasthan has experienced the most significant increase in road fatalities, with a 6% rise in fatalities compared to 2022.

    In 2023, road accidents claimed the lives of 95,246 individuals across these six states, an increase from 91,936 in 2022. This rise is alarming, especially as there are plans to reduce road accident fatalities by 50% over the next six years. Although the Ministry of Road Transport and the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) have yet to publish their reports on road accidents and deaths. Initial data highlights the critical need for action on this matter.

    What Measures Does Nitin Gadkari Suggest for Improving Road Safety?

    Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has voiced his concerns over these rising figures and urged officials and engineers to investigate the causes of road accidents thoroughly. He emphasizes the importance of taking effective measures to improve road safety.

    Satyendra Garg, a former IPS officer with experience as Joint Commissioner (Traffic) in Delhi, believes that thorough investigations and proactive measures can significantly lower the number of road deaths. Garg’s experience in dealing with traffic issues in Delhi revealed that many accidents and fatalities could be avoided.

    How Should Officials Change their Approach to Road Safety?

    Experts believe that officials should change their perspective on road safety. The assumption that an increase in roads and vehicles automatically leads to more accidents needs to be questioned.

    Naresh Raghavan, a road safety expert and author of a driving manual, stresses the necessity of enforcing traffic regulations and educating drivers. He notes that while law enforcement can focus on a handful of rules. He added that it is crucial to teach drivers the fundamental road rules to enhance safety on the roads.

    At a recent conference focusing on new trends and technologies in road and bridge construction, Minister Gadkari highlighted the severe consequences of road accidents on society.  He noted that nearly 60% of fatalities occur among individuals aged 18 to 34. The socio-economic cost of road accidents is approximately 3% of India’s GDP, highlighting the critical need for prompt intervention.

    Gadkari urged all stakeholders to take road safety issues seriously, investigate accidents, and rectify hazardous locations. He stated, “Deal with road safety issues sensitively, investigate accidents, fix dangerous places, and address issues. We have never lost so many people even in wars.”

    As the statistics reveal a growing crisis, India must prioritize road safety. This can be achieved through comprehensive investigations, improved driving education, and stricter enforcement of traffic laws. Addressing these issues can help prevent future tragedies and save lives on Indian roads.
