Major Sita Ashok Shelke, an Indian army officer has recently gained admiration for playing a pivotal role in the construction of Bailey Bridge in Chooralmala village, Wayanad, Kerala.
Alongside her 70-members team, Major Shelke overcame significant challenges, worked non-stop and successfully rebuilt the bridge within an impressive 31 hours.
Notably, the Bailey Bridge in Chooralmala village was affected by recent landslide in Wayand. The Bridge was re-built by the Indian Army’s Madras Engineering Group (MEG).
Hailing from Gadilgaon Village in Maharashtra, the Indian Army Officer, Major Shelke took the charge and lead the team efficiently, so that the rescuers could be facilitated after devasting tragedy in Wayanad.
The construction of the 190-foot-long bridge enables the rescuers to reach the affected area, provide necessary aid to the vulnerable.
However, major Shelke’s tireless efforts and leadership in the construction, has got widespread attention. Her pictures, being the only woman responsible for the construction of the bridge has been making rounds on social media, earning praise for her bravery from the worldwide audience and Industrialist Anand Mahindra

Indian Billionaire businessman and the Chairman of Mahindra Group, Anand Mahindra recently took to his X (former twitter) to applaud major Shelke. In the tweet, he referred her as “Wonder Woman of Wayand” and wrote, “There is no need for DC Superheroes. We have them in real life out here.”
Moreover, the post further got wide attention on social media, reflecting Major Shelke’s determination. Despite facing hurdles, including massive debris and a rapidly flowing river.
Additionally, in a recent statement, the Indian army officer extended her honor for efficiently carrying out the task, with her team. “I don’t consider myself the only woman here; I am a soldier. I am here as a representative of the Indian Army and take immense pride in being a part of this launching team,” she added.Â
She also expressed her gratitude to the local authorities, state officials, and the community for their support during the bridge’s construction.
