Amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, Israel carried out several deadly air strikes on Hezbollah rescue facility in Central Beirut, Lebanon on Thursday, October 3, 2024. The attack came after multiple Israeli troops were killed near the border.
The incident claimed five people and left eight wounded. Notably, this is the first airstrike that hit close to Beirut’s center just meters away from Lebanon’s Parliament. There was a total of five Israeli strikes that targeted the Southern Suburb of Dahieh in the capital city.
As per the Israeli Defense Forces, the attack came in response to the previous attacks in which eight soldiers were killed in combat in Southern Lebanon. These were among the first losses since IDF began ground operations against Hezbollah, the Iran-back group in Lebanon.
Hezbollah (Lebanon’s Military Group) said it had hit the Israeli tanks during the fighting. They have enough arms and ammunition to push back the Israeli forces.
Earlier, the Israeli Defense Forces also said more soldiers and tanks had joined them to destroy terrorist infrastructure in Lebanese border villages.
Recent Airstrikes attack against Hezbollah
Additionally, three explosions in Dahieh, a southern Suburb of Beirut occurred during the latest overnight Israeli airstrikes targeting Hezbollah facilities.
These explosions caused significant disruption in the area, which is known to be a stronghold of Hezbollah.
Israeli Attacks claim locals’ lives
Before this overnight attack, Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported that 46 people had been killed and 85 were left wounded in Israeli bombings in the last 24 hours. These attacks are taking place without differentiating between civilians and combatants.
US Reiterated commitment to Israel
Meanwhile, amid the Chaos, President Joe Biden on Tuesday directed the US military to help Israel to combat the Iranian missiles. “This is a testament to Israeli military capability and the US military”, said Biden during his first on-camera remarks on the situation.
He said the war is a testament to intensive planning between the United States and Israel to anticipate and defend against the brazen attack we expected.
“Make no mistake, the United States is fully, fully, fully supportive of Israel”, Biden added.
He also stated that he does not support any potential Israeli retaliatory strike on Iranian nuclear sites, fearing that such retaliation could escalate into a full-scale war in the Middle East.
On Wednesday, he said that the US will impose sanctions on Iran, saying Iran went “way off the board” with its attack.
The US has repeatedly called for de-escalation and has made long-running negotiations on a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian armed group Hamas in Gaza, but so far without success.
Iran’s attack also drew international condemnation, as the Group of Seven Nations (G7) all “unequivocally condemned Iran’s attack against Israel,” according to the White House.
Biden Directed the US Military to help Israel
President Biden has also directed the US military to assist Israel in intercepting Iranian missiles. The troops are reportedly sent to the Middle East to bolster security and be prepared to defend Israel if necessary. This move is part of a broader effort to ensure stability in the region amidst the ongoing tensions.
These additional forces sent by the US would raise the total number of troops in the region to 43,000.
The increased presence will also be anticipated to involve fighter jets and attack aircraft squadrons, Pentagon.
This initiative is taken following the recent strikes in Lebanon and the assassination of the Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, leading to a significant escalation of war in the Middle East between Israel and Hezbollah.
