Uganda saw heavy rainfall, where many houses swept away after unfortunate landslide. At least 13 people have been killed in this landslide in eastern Uganda. Helping officials fear that the true number of dead are much higher as not less than 40 houses have swept away.
The landslides triggered by heavy rainfall affected multiple villages in the Bulambuli district, about 280 km (178 miles) from the capital Kampala.
The Ugandan Red Cross Society said at least 13 people have died, but the media has reported the death toll could be as high as 30 people. The roads are covered in mud and the rain is still falling. The affected area is about 50 acres with homesteads and farmlands spread downhill.
A rescue operation is underway, the Ugandan Red Cross Society said on X: “Most of the bodies recovered have been of children”, according to local newspaper the Daily Monitor. Heavy rainfall has flooded the East African country for the last few days.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has issued a disaster warning on X :”People are suspected to be missing and some feared buried by slides,” his statement said.
Rivers have burst their banks, flooding schools and churches, destroying bridges, and isolating communities. The military has been deployed to assist with search and recovery efforts.
The defense forces said on X that two boats had been deployed during an operation to rescue a taxi stuck on a bridge. One of the boats capsized and an engineer died.
In parliament on Thursday, the speaker, Anitah Among, expressed her condolences to the relatives of those who have lost their lives in the flooding across the country.

Eastern Uganda stretches from the shores of Lake Victoria to the lush banks of River Nile in Jinja, to the high altitudes of Mount Elgon and beyond. Its study area covers a gross area of about 37,020 sq km, of which about 9,390 sq km is open water. The total land component of the study area is about 27,630 sq km including some 2,500 sq km of the low-lying wetland.
