In 17th-century India, bazaars were usually built in open air. Inspired by covered arcades in West Asia and Peshawar, Shah Jahan commissioned Mukarmat Khan to build a similar ‘covered’ market in the Red Fort. The design was a big change for Indian bazars, making it suitable for Delhi’s hot weather.

During Shahjahan’s era, the bazaar focused on luxury goods like silk, brocades, velvets, gold and silverware along with jewelery and gems, serving the royal families.

Shah Jahan probably decided to position Chhatta Bazaar at the main entrance of the fort to display the culture, wealth, craftsmanship, and achievements of the Mughal Empire.
