During the Liberal leadership event in Ottawa, Trudeau was invited by his daughter on the stage to speak. In a video circulated on the social media platform X, he was seen dabbing his eyes with tissues.
After Mark Carney was elected as the leader of Canada’s Liberty Party and becomes the new Prime Minister, the outgoing PM Justin Trudeau was seen in tears in an emotional farewell speech while taking a dig at the US President Donald Trump.
“You know as I look out across this room I have just one question, How’s the Liberal Party doing tonight?” Trudeau began his address.
He shared that Canada is facing an “existential challenge” from the United States. “For these past years… past 10 years, there have been challenges, crisis after crisis have been thrown at Canadians,” he said in his speech. “But through every crisis, Canadians have shown who they are,” he added.
Justin Trudeau burst into tears at farewell address, saying he ‘put Canadians first’ amid trade war with Trump. “We’ve pulled together, we’ve stood up for each other and every single time, we’ve emerged even stronger,” Trudeau said.
“And now, as Canadians face, from our neighbor, an existential challenge, an economic crisis, Canadians are showing exactly what we are made of… by proudly embracing who we are,” Trudeau was seen telling the party loyalists present in the event.
“We’re a country where we have always defended a woman’s right to choose, and we’re a country that will be diplomatic when we can, but fight when we must be elbows up,” he was further heard saying. ‘We are taking him back’
Trudeau’s daughter, Ella-Grace Margaret Trudeau, gave a speech at the event in support of her father and the outgoing Canadian PM before inviting him on stage. “My brothers and I have shared our dad with you for the past 12 years. Now, we are taking him back,” Trudeau’s daughter said. “But before we do, I guess you can have him one last time. Please welcome your prime minister, my dad Justin Trudeau,” she made the announcement.
On the other hand, a day after offering Canada a one-month reprieve on punishing, virtually across-the-board 25% tariffs, President Donald Trump has threatened new tariffs on Canadian lumber and dairy products. It’s yet another twist in a serpentine trade policy that seems to shift on an hourly basis.
“Canada has been ripping us off for years on lumber and on dairy products,” Trump said in an Oval Office address citing Canada’s roughly 250% tariff on US dairy exports to the country. Trump said America would match those tariffs dollar-for-dollar.
“We may do it as early as today, or we’ll wait until Monday or Tuesday,” Trump said. “We’re going to charge the same thing. It’s not fair. It never has been fair, and they’ve treated our farmers badly.”
Canadian trade minister Mary Ng pushed back on Trump’s comments, saying his claim that Canada was “ripping off” the United States was “not true.” Ng said that Trump’s proposed reciprocal tariffs on dairy and lumber are “completely unjustified. These tariffs if imposed in that order of magnitude is completely unjustified.”
Trump’s announcement gave investors, businesses and consumers another strong dose of whiplash. Just a few days earlier, Trump announced a one-month pause on all tariffs on Canada and Mexico on products that comply with the US-Mexico-Canada free trade treaty, known as the USMCA. That had, at least temporarily, given many industries, especially autos and agriculture, a major sigh of relief. Next, Trump said more “changes and adjustments” on tariffs should be expected in the future.
“There’ll always be some modifications,” Trump said from the Oval Office. “If you have a wall in front of you, sometimes you have to go around the wall instead of through it.”
