During his visit to the US to negotiate vital security guarantees for his country in the brutal ongoing conflict with Russia, it was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s fashion choices that became a subject of political debate following his meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Zelenskyy has consistently donned military-style attire, a symbolic representation of his nation’s ongoing struggle. However, his choice of clothing has drawn criticism from certain figures in the media, leading to a broader discussion on decorum, symbolism, and political messaging.
The White House Meeting and Trump’s Reaction
Upon arriving at the White House for his meeting with Trump, Zelenskyy was greeted with a comment that highlighted his attire. “He’s all dressed up today,” Trump remarked to reporters, signaling an apparent expectation of a more formal dress code. The event quickly took an uncomfortable turn when Brian Glenn, a correspondent for the right-wing outlet Real America’s Voice, questioned Zelenskyy’s fashion choices.
“Why don’t you wear a suit?” Glenn asked. “You’re at the highest level in this country’s office, and you refuse to wear a suit. Do you own a suit?” He further added, “A lot of Americans have problems with you not respecting the office.”
Zelenskyy, undeterred by the question, responded firmly: “I will wear a suit after this war is over. Maybe something like yours. Maybe better, maybe cheaper.” His response emphasized his priority—focusing on Ukraine’s war efforts rather than his personal attire.
Symbolism of Zelenskyy’s Military Attire
Since the onset of the war, Zelenskyy has adopted a uniform consisting of an olive-green jumper bearing the Ukrainian trident, paired with combat boots. This choice is more than just a stylistic preference; it is a deliberate symbol of solidarity with Ukrainian soldiers fighting on the front lines. His consistent refusal to wear suits during high-profile meetings, including those with world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), reflects his commitment to the image of a wartime leader.
This approach is not unprecedented. During World War II, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill also refrained from wearing formal suits during key meetings, including his visits to the White House, as a gesture that underscored his country’s wartime status. Ironically, Trump himself recently reinstated a bust of Churchill in the White House, seemingly endorsing the British wartime leader’s choices while simultaneously allowing criticism of Zelenskyy’s similar stance.
A Double Standard on Attire?
The scrutiny of Zelenskyy’s attire also raises questions about inconsistencies in dress code expectations for world leaders. Several foreign dignitaries, such as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman have been welcomed at the White House wearing traditional ethnic attire rather than Western-style suits. Despite this, Zelenskyy’s choice of military clothing has been uniquely politicized.
Critics were also quick to point out Elon Musk’s apparent non-chalant nature regarding the dress code in the Oval Office. He has been seen wearing an informal t-shirt and jacket combo at numerous briefings at the White House, even accompanied by his kid at times.
Additionally, the circumstances surrounding Glenn’s pointed questioning merit attention. His media outlet, Real America’s Voice, has been known to promote conspiracy theories, and the fact that it was granted access to the White House press pool while mainstream outlets like The Associated Press were restricted suggests a selective approach to media representation at the event.
