Tie between Right-wing leader Daniel Noboa and left-wing leader Luisa Gonzalez of Ecuador as they received identical amounts of votes, the second round announced in April. President Noboa had gained 44.4% of votes and the opposition leader Luisa Gonzalez had garnered 43.9% of votes, after counting 90% of the ballots, as per official reports.
“We have won”
The left-wing leader Louisa Gonzalez, a lawyer turned lawmaker, told her supporters they had achieved a significant victory by declaring identical results a ‘statistical tie.’ She proclaimed, “We have won.” This left-wing leader, a single mother, initially trailed in pre-election surveys, while some exit polls indicated that Noboa would secure half the votes needed to avoid a run-off.
Gonzalez was defeated in the October 2023 elections, which were triggered by then-President Guillermo Lasso’s dissolution of the assembly. The 47-year-old leader had previously worked under President Correa’s administration, until picked up for the snap election, she was unknown to the voters till then, however, her support came through from the voters seeking a chance of change.
“The country’s security is in pieces. I want change. I’m not saying that she’s going to solve it – but let’s see what happens if we give her a chance.” a citizen said, according to BBC.
The Noboa Case
The 37-year-old president secured reelection in 2023, facing the same opponent. Concentrating mainly on gang-related violence, he declared a state of emergency and sent military forces to the streets and prisons in an effort to reduce the increasing crime rate. Supporters say about him, “The support of the military he’s introduced – their presence is already helping. He has brought us a certain stability. There are many problems still pending, but I hope he continues with his plan.”
A teenager from the country expressed his confidence in President Noboa by saying, “I think the majority of people who voted for other candidates will prefer to vote for Daniel Noboa in the second round, Noboa handles insecurity well. Crime is fairly well controlled. I think he will also improve the economy.” Although Noboa has attempted to manage crime rates, the apprehension of gang members and a decrease in prison violence remain significant concerns. The delayed reaction to last year’s drought in the nation has also faced criticism.
The country Issues
Ecuador continues to face significant challenges with elevated unemployment rates, a fragile economy, and energy shortages that can result in blackouts lasting up to 14 hours. Crime is a serious issue, with murders and kidnappings occurring on a daily basis, alongside ongoing battles between drug cartels within the country. Both election candidates have their own campaign manifestos and resolutions for national issues. The second runoff in April will determine the winner and the future direction of Ecuador.
