Billionaire entrepreneur and government disruptor Elon Musk is making sweeping changes to federal organizations, gutting bureaucratic institutions, and implementing a controversial 120-hour workweek at the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). His aggressive push for reform has sparked intense debate, raising concerns over legal boundaries, work-life balance, and the future of governmental operations in the United States.
Musk’s Controversial Work Ethic
Musk, who has long been known for his relentless work ethic in the private sector, has now applied the same principles to the public sector, imposing a grueling 120-hour workweek at DOGE. In a statement that has since gone viral, Musk taunted his critics, comparing government bureaucracy to a competitive game where his opponents were simply not working hard enough.
“DOGE is working 120 hours a week. Our bureaucratic opponents optimistically work 40 hours a week. That is why they are losing so fast,” Musk posted on X (formerly Twitter), responding to a post that praised DOGE for uncovering fraud and inefficiencies within the previous administration.
The numbers are staggering: A 120-hour workweek translates to more than 17 hours per day, leaving employees with little time for personal life, rest, or recovery. Supporters hail Musk’s work ethic as necessary for revamping a broken system, while critics argue that such extreme working conditions are not only inhumane but also counterproductive.
Legality and Ethical Concerns Over Extreme Work Hours
The legal implications of such extensive workweeks have also been called into question. One user pointed out, “While working for the federal government, I learned that it’s illegal to work unauthorized overtime. Doing so obligates the government to pay, because slavery is illegal. So how are federal staff in DOGE legally putting in these hours? Multiple shifts?”
Others argue that working long hours does not necessarily translate to increased productivity. The debate continues as watchdog organizations and lawmakers scrutinize the legitimacy of Musk’s policies.
Shutting Down Agencies and Reshaping the Bureaucracy
Musk’s influence in government has extended beyond mere efficiency measures. Within his first two weeks in office, his lieutenants gained access to key financial and data systems, casting aside career officials who raised concerns over defying long-established protocols. His team moved swiftly to shut down entire agencies, including the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), a major provider of foreign assistance.
In addition, Musk has seized control of the United States Digital Service, renaming it the United States DOGE Service. He has also taken over the Office of Personnel Management, which oversees federal human resources, and gained access to the Treasury’s payment system, raising alarms over potential restrictions on government spending.
These actions have astounded and alarmed Democrats, government watchdogs, and ethics experts. Many question whether Musk is violating federal laws that grant Congress the sole power to create and dismantle federal agencies, oversee public spending, and ensure government transparency. There are also concerns about whether Musk’s influence could result in financial decisions that personally benefit him and his private enterprises.
A New Era of Government or a Legal Nightmare?
Empowered by President Donald Trump’s administration, Musk is waging a largely unchecked war against what he perceives as an inefficient and bloated federal bureaucracy. His actions have already had far-reaching consequences, with both praise and condemnation coming from different corners of the political spectrum.
While Musk’s supporters view him as a necessary force for dismantling decades of bureaucratic waste, his critics warn of the dangers of unchecked power, lack of oversight, and the potential erosion of democratic processes.
