Ever Since Trump has taken charge as the new US President, many executive orders have been laid by him after resuming office. From birthright law to banning transgender athletes from women’s sports, Trump’s executive orders just came one after the other. One such EO includes changing the name of the ” Gulf of Mexico” to ” Gulf of America”
Google Renamed Gulf Of Mexico
Google on Monday renamed the Gulf of Mexico into the Gulf of America on Google Maps after receiving Trump’s executive orders to do the same. A tech giant in a blog post wrote that people residing outside America will continue to see both names, as in the case of other disrupted locations.
Google wrote in a blog post that People using Maps in the U.S. will see ‘Gulf of America,’ and people in Mexico will see ‘Gulf of Mexico.’ Everyone else will see both names.”
Google On Changing the Name
Google last month on X stated that the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico was done following Trump’s executive orders and also because it follows the guidelines of the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) . This is a database run by the US Geological Survey.
Another Name Change
Not only this, another prominent name of a place in the US has also been changed as per the X post of Google. The name of the Mount Denali in Alaska has been changed to its former name Mt McKinney, after former US President MT McKinney. It was updated in the official database following Trump’s executive order.
Mount Denali
Mount Denali is the highest peak in North America. that was given its name by the indigenous Koyukon Athabascan people. The US government changed its name to Mount McKinley in 1917 in honor of the late Republican president, who was assassinated by an anarchist in 1901.
Former US President Barack Obama’s administration restored the mountain’s Indigenous name in 2015 before a presidential visit to Alaska. Trump’s decision to rename it again to Mt McKinney has drawn criticisms from the Indigenous groups of people in Alkasa and it sparked Diplomatic tensions within Mexico.
Criticisms From The Mexican President
Trump’s decision to rename the natural features drew backlash from Indigenous groups in Alaska and prompted Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to sarcastically suggest that North America be renamed “Mexican America”, as it was referred to in one of the country’s founding documents.
Trump signed his executive order to rename the natural features hours after taking office on January 20, citing it as a decision to “honor American greatness”.
Why Did Trump Rename the Gulf Of Mexico
In an official proclamation explaining his decision, Trump stated: “I have taken this action, as outlined in the order because the body of water formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico has long been a vital resource for our once-thriving nation and remains an enduring part of America.”
While flying aboard Air Force One from Palm Beach, Florida, to New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX, Trump emphasized the significance of the renaming as the aircraft passed over the Gulf. “As my administration restores American pride in our nation’s history and achievements, it is only fitting that we recognize this historic moment and the renaming of the Gulf of America,” he said, according to the news sources
