As per Press Trust of India, on 9th January, Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) ‘Tarini’ carrying two women officers crossed the International Date Line (IDL), achieving a significant milestone during the crew’s global circumnavigation expedition, officials said.

“As the vessel sailed eastwards, the crew adjusted their clocks to account for the date change, symbolizing the blending of two consecutive calendar days,” a Navy spokesperson said.

“Tarini successfully crossed the International Date Line (IDL) then at approximately 1130 hours, Indian Standard Time (IST),” he said.

This notable achievement marks a significant milestone in the crew’s ongoing global circumnavigation expedition, the official added. ‘Tarini’ is undertaking the global circumnavigation journey under the Navika Sagar Parikrama II, an Indian Navy expedition attempting a double-handed circumnavigation of the earth via the three Great Capes. The boat was flagged off from Goa on October 2, 2024, by Navy chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi.

Carrying the two women officers, ‘Tarini’ had left the ‘Lyttelton Port’ in New Zealand for the longest and the most challenging leg of its expedition. INSV ‘Tarini’ had reached Lyttelton on December 22, completing the second leg of the historic circumnavigation being undertaken by two Indian Navy officers — Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa A — symbolizing India’s growing prowess of maritime exploration.

The crew had left the Lyttelton Port for its onward passage — third leg of the expedition — to Port Stanley (Falkland Islands). This is the longest leg of the expedition with a distance of approximately 5,600 nautical miles (about 10,400 km), the official said.

Admiral Tripathi had recently complimented the two women officers onboard ‘Tarini’ for exhibiting courage, grit and dedication in their ongoing expedition, saying it “exemplifies the indomitable spirit of adventure and resilience that defines the naval force”. Lyttelton is a port town on the north shore of Lyttelton Harbour, at the northwestern end of Banks Peninsula and close to Christchurch, on the eastern coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Lyttelton Port of Christchurch is a general cargo port as well as the largest coal export terminal in Lyttelton, New Zealand.

INSV Tarini is the second sailboat of the Indian Navy. It was constructed at Aquarius Shipyard located in Goa. After undergoing extensive sea trials, it was commissioned to Indian Navy service on 18 February 2017. The boat has all facilities and encourages eco-friendly resources. It collects and updates meteorological, ocean, and wave data regularly.

Port Stanley is a community in the Central Elgin Municipality of Elgin County, Ontario, Canada. It is located on the north shore of Lake Erie at the mouth of Kettle Creek. It had a population of 2,148 in 2016.It is located on the island of East Falkland, on a north-facing slope.

The site of Port Stanley was part of an important early route from Lake Erie to other inland waterways for a succession of explorers and travelers of the 17th and 18th centuries. It was an important landing point and camping spot. Other notable visitors included François Dollier de Casson and René de Bréhant de Galinée (1670), Jean-Baptiste Céloron de Blainville (1749) and Sir William Johnson (1761). In commemoration of this role, a site bounded by Bridge, Main and Colbourne Streets was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1923 and was marked with a landmark.

Lieutenant-Colonel John Bostwick received the first land grant and settled in what is now Port Stanley in 1804. Around 1824, it was renamed Port Stanley after Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby, who had visited nearby Port Talbot.
