In a tragic turn of events, a 17-year-old boy died at an educational institute in Pucheng, China, on Thursday, January 2, 2025. The school called his death an accident, but soon the allegations spread on social media that authorities were covering up the case and it was not an accident. This incident led to massive protests in the northwestern city of China against the authorities.

In the videos surfacing over the internet, the protesters can be seen engaging in clashes with the police. The officers were also seen beating some demonstrators in Pucheng in Shaanxi province.

According to the Chinese media, around 50,000 people till now have joined the protest and rally after the boy was bullied to death in his school dormitory. Notably, it is the largest protest observed in the country since January 2023.

    Death or cover-up?

The school declared that the boy identified with the surname Dang died in an accident. But the social media and protestors claimed that he was bullied and beaten to death.

    Preliminary Investigation

As per the CCTV reports and the authority’s investigation, Dang’s death has been caused after a verbal and physical altercation with his roommates. The inquiry came following the thousands of protestors gathered outside the school.

The reports further also claimed that Dang was woken up in the night and chatting with his fellow mates in his dormitory, which later escalated into an argument and altercation. But the situation had been resolved by the school staff, as per the CCTV.

However, later, the 17-year-old boy was found dead at the foot of the dormitory building.

“At about 3 am on January 2, Huang, who shared a dormitory with Dang, found a wooden stool under the balcony window of the dormitory when he went to the toilet,” a news agency stated.

The Chinese media claimed the incident was an unfortunate accident where Dang fell from a height of the building. Meanwhile, a thorough investigation in the case has been conducted, and the case is not being treated as a criminal case yet.
