    Which US Presidents and Former Presidents have been shot?

    In a recent devastating incident, the 45th former President of the USA, Donald Trump, collapsed to the ground, holding his face While he was in a rally for the US Presidential elections due in November.  

    The bullet injured the upper part of the right ear and blood was visible on his face when the secret service escorted him away. The Secret Service looks after the safety and security of the US Former President Trump.  

    According to the authorities, the rifleman was identified as 20-years-old Thomas Mathew Crooks, who was later killed by the Secret Service.

    This is not the first time in American history that a US President or a former president has been shot. Similar to the attack on Donald Trump, many other former presidents have been shot, including: 

    Former President Andrew Jackson

    The 7th President of the USA, Andrew Jackson survived an assassination attempt on January 30, 1835.

    An unemployed house painter named Richard Lawrence tried to shoot Jackson with two pistols, but both weapons misfired.

    Jackson then subdued Lawrence by striking him with a cane.

    Late President Abraham Lincoln

    The 16th President of the USA, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated and shot in the back of the head on April 14, 1865, by John Wikes Booth. Booth was an actor in the play that night and Southern sympathizer at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. Booth believed that he could retard the confederacy by killing him. 

    Late James A. Garfield

    The 20th President of the United States, James A Garfield was shot at a train station on July 2, 1881 by Charles J Guiteau.

    Guiteau killed Garfield with a.44 British Bulldog, thinking it would look impressive in a museum.

    The main reason behind the assassination was his mental and anger behind the president’s refusal to appoint him and not getting a job at Garfield’s European consulship.

    Late President William McKinley

    The 25th President of the USA, William McKinley died eight days on September 14, 1901, after being shot at Buffalo, Newyork by Leon Czolgosz.

    The assassin viewed McKinley as a symbol of oppression and felt it was his obligation as an anarchist to assassinate him.

    McKinley was making an appearance at the Pan-American Exposition during the attack. 

    Former Theodore Roosevelt

    The 26th President of USA, Theodore Roosevalt survived an assassination attempt on October 14, 1912, in Milwaukee Wisconsin.

    John Schrank shot President Roosevelt while he was giving a speech during his re-election campaign.

    According to the Library of Congress, a folded-up 50-page copy of a speech manuscript slowed the bullet, and an eyeglass case in his chest pocket saved his life.

    Authorities later found the assassin Schrank legally insane and institutionalized until his death in 1943. 

    Former Franklin D Roosevelt

    The 32nd President of the USA, Franklin D Roosevelt narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on February 15, 1933, by Guiseppe Zangrara who fired five shots at him in Miami. An assassin later killed Mayor Anton Cermak of Chicago. 

    Former President Harry S Truman

    The 33rd President of USA, Harry S Truman survived an assassination attempt on November1, 1950 after two Puerto Rican nationalists attempted to kill him at Blair House in Washington D.C.

    The attempt resulted in the death of a White House police officer. 

    Late President John F Kennedy

    The 35th President of USA, John F Kennedy often referred as JFK, was assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Downtown Dallas, Texas. He was riding a motorcade through Dealey Plaza by Lee Harvey Oswald, a former marine.

    Reports stated bullets hit the President on his neck and head, causing him to lean forward towards his wife, Jacqueline.

    Jack Ruby, a Dallas nightclub operator later killed Oswald in the basement of the Dallas police station. 

    Late President Ronald Reagan

    The 40th President of the USA, Ronald Reagan was shot on March 30, 1981, by John Hickley Jr at the Washington Hilton Hotel.

    No one noticed President Reagan’s wounds until he began coughing out blood. The incident seriously injured him, and he spent 12 days in the hospital.

    Later, authorities arrested Hickley and revealed his motives. His motive for attempting to kill Reagan was to impress actress Jodie Foster.
