Just hours after Blue Origin’s maiden orbital mission made headlines, SpaceX reclaimed the limelight with its latest Starship test, which resulted in a dazzling display of lights over the Atlantic Ocean due to the debris from its upper stage Starship. While the event was not a success, spirits were lifted thanks to the mesmerizing sight. The event itself showcased the cutting-edge capabilities of Elon Musk’s aerospace venture by catching the booster in its “Mechazilla” arm. The failure of the launch underlined the challenges inherent in pushing technological boundaries, while paving the way for learning in future ambitions.

On January 16, at precisely 4:37 p.m. CT, SpaceX’s Starship lifted off from Starbase in Texas, marking its seventh flight test. All 33 Raptor engines powered the Super Heavy booster and upper stage Starship on a seemingly flawless ascent. Yet, as is often the case with cutting-edge technology, triumph turned to drama within minutes.

One of the day’s most remarkable moments came seven minutes into the mission when the Super Heavy booster executed a controlled return to Earth. This maneuver, involving a series of complex relights and burns, culminated in a breathtaking catch by the “Mechazilla” launch tower. The “chopstick” arms of the tower secured the massive booster, marking only the second successful catch of its kind.

This feat was greeted with rapturous applause from ground teams, cementing SpaceX’s reputation for engineering excellence. However, the celebration was short-lived as the upper stage of Starship faced a catastrophic failure.

After a successful stage separation, the upper stage Starship ignited its six Raptor engines and ascended towards orbit. Eight and a half minutes into the flight, telemetry with the vehicle was lost. According to initial data, a fire in the aft section led to what SpaceX refers to as a “rapid unscheduled disassembly”—or in simpler words, it blew apart.

The failure resulted in debris raining down over the Atlantic Ocean, creating a mesmerizing spectacle captured by users on X. Dramatic footage showed the upper stage disintegrating in a fiery cascade, visible from hundreds of miles away.

    Disruption in the Skies

The explosion had ripple effects far beyond SpaceX’s test site. The falling debris led to significant disruptions in air traffic over the Atlantic, particularly near the Turks and Caicos Islands. Flight tracking websites like FlightRadar24 revealed numerous commercial flights altering course to avoid potential hazards.

At Miami International Airport, some flights were temporarily grounded, while at least 20 were diverted to alternate airports. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed it was assessing the incident and would work closely with SpaceX to determine the root cause and ensure future safety.

    Learning from Failure

Despite the setback, SpaceX remained resolute in its mission to develop a fully reusable space transportation system. “Success comes from what we learn,” the company stated, emphasizing the importance of iterative development in achieving their long-term goal of making life multiplanetary.

Preparations for the eighth Starship flight test are already underway, with upgraded designs and systems aimed at addressing the issues identified during this mission.
