‘Trump and I both put nation first, that’s our connect’: PM Modi

In a recent interview with US-based podcaster and AI researcher Lex Fridman, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke in detail about his strong rapport with former US President Donald Trump. Modi explained that their bond was primarily rooted in their shared philosophy of putting their respective nations first. The Prime Minister recalled various moments that defined their friendship, including Trump’s display of trust at the ‘Howdy Modi’ event and their candid interactions at the White House.

    A Shared Nation-First Ideology

During the conversation, Modi emphasized that one of the key reasons he and Trump connected so well was their mutual belief in prioritizing their nations. He highlighted how Trump remained unwaveringly dedicated to America, even after facing an assassination attempt during his re-election campaign.

“His life was for his nation. His reflection showed his America First spirit, just as I believe in Nation First. I stand for India first, and that’s why we connect so well. These are the things that truly resonate,” Modi stated. The Prime Minister’s remarks underscored the alignment of their leadership styles, as both leaders consistently championed policies that sought to elevate their respective countries on the global stage.

Trump’s Unshaken Trust at the ‘Howdy Modi’ Event

One of the most striking moments that Modi recounted was the ‘Howdy Modi’ event in Houston, Texas, where Trump walked with him into a massive crowd of thousands without any security concerns. Modi described this as an incredible moment that showcased Trump’s trust in him.

“In American life, it’s almost impossible for the President to walk into a crowd of thousands, but without even a moment’s hesitation, he agreed and started walking with me. His entire security detail was thrown off guard, but for me, that moment was truly touching,” he said.

He further elaborated that such an act reflected Trump’s courage and decisiveness. “He makes his own decisions, but he also trusted me enough in that moment to walk with me into the crowd. That sense of mutual trust and strong bond was something I truly witnessed that day. Even if you watch the video now, you’ll be amazed at that moment,” he added.

An Unforgettable First Meeting at the White House

Modi recalled his first visit to the White House after Trump assumed office, describing how the former US President broke traditional protocols to personally welcome him. Contrary to the formal and structured meetings that world leaders usually have at such venues, Trump took Modi on an informal tour of the White House himself.

“The very moment I stepped into the White House, he broke all formal protocols right away. And then, he took me on a tour of the White House,”

The Indian Prime Minister was particularly impressed by Trump’s deep knowledge of American history. “He wasn’t holding any notes or cue cards, nor was anyone accompanying him to assist. He pointed things out himself. ‘This is where Abraham Lincoln lived,’ he said. He even explained why the courtroom was designed in a certain way. He would point at tables and tell me which President signed what and on what date. I found that incredibly impressive,” Modi recalled.

This personal and detailed tour left a lasting impression on Modi, who saw in Trump a leader who was genuinely passionate about his country’s history.

    Friendship Beyond Political Terms

Despite the changes in leadership following Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 US presidential election, Modi mentioned that his camaraderie with Trump remained intact. He revealed that even after stepping down, Trump continued to refer to him as a friend whenever the opportunity arose.

“Even when his first term ended, and President Biden took office, four years passed, but whenever someone we both knew met Trump, and this must have happened dozens of times, he would say, ‘Modi is my friend, convey my regards.’ That kind of gesture is rare,” Modi shared.

This, he emphasized, was a testament to the depth of their relationship—one that went beyond diplomatic obligations and remained rooted in mutual admiration and respect.

A Bond That Stands the Test of Time

Modi concluded by reiterating that despite political transitions, the trust and warmth between him and Trump never wavered. Whether through direct conversations or indirect messages, their connection endured over time.

Through his reflections, Modi painted a picture of a unique friendship that extended beyond political interests. Their shared leadership styles, mutual trust, and personal interactions made their bond a significant part of modern diplomatic history.
