In a significant turn of events, two individuals have been apprehended by the police for assaulting a senior officer at an NCC camp recently. The incident took place at KMM College of Arts and Sciences in Thrikkakara, Kerala, on December 23. It occurred following the suspected food poisoning case at the camp that affected 86 cadets have been reported.
The tension began to surface after the cadets showed the symptoms of feeling uneasiness, stomachache, and vomiting at the camp. This led to a crowd, allegedly led by local political figures, barging in the camp premises.
The reports also suggested that some intruders allegedly entered the camp at around 11:30 pm, and two of them allegedly attacked a uniformed army officer on duty. The officer has been identified as Lt Col Karnail Singh.
According to the police commissioner, P. Vimaladitya, “In the Thrikkakara camp incident, two people have been arrested who were involved in the manhandling of the office of the forces. The investigation is underway. Legal action will be initiated against those who are involved.”
About the Incident
Notably, the incident took place on Monday night, last week, when parents angered by reports of food poisoning gathered at the college. According to the FIR, the two accused in the case were identified as SFI district secretariat members and a BJP councilor from the Kalamassery municipality, who threatened and attacked the officer. One of the suspects allegedly stabbed him with a sharpened object, causing severe injury to his cheek, neck, and back.

The video of the incident shows that the officer was staying calm and not fighting back, even after being attacked. The video of the incident has been surfacing over the internet, capturing mixed responses, such as regarding the security concerns at the camp.
About the Food Poisoning Incident at NCC Camp
It was a 10-day combined annual training camp organized by the 21st Kerala Battalion NCC. The camp witnessed a significant criticism after the preliminary investigations by the state health department found that the kitchen had been managed under unhygienic conditions.
The inspection also revealed that some of the kitchen workers also lacked the health cards. Food, water, and stool samples were collected for testing to determine the exact cause of the food poisoning.
Following the incident, the cadets were immediately taken to the local hospitals and discharged on Tuesday morning. The camp was temporarily halted and was scheduled to resume from Thursday, December 26, 2024, after ensuring the health and safety measures of the cadets.
In response to the matter, a departmental inquiry was also launched under Brigadier Suresh G, NCC Group Commander of Kollam, to inspect the poisoning.
In addition to this, Kerala Minister of Higher Education R Bindu also announced a separate probe led by the principal secretary of the college, Ishita Roy.
