Afghanistan batter Ibrahim Zadran creates history by registering the highest-ever individual score in the history of the ICC Champions Trophy. The feat is achieved during the first innings of the England Vs Afghanistan match at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, on Wednesday, February 26.
Ibrahim Zadran’s blistering knock of 177 has now surpassed previous record-holder Ben Duckett, who scored 165 in the same edition, at the same venue against Australia last week. This was Zadran’s 6th ODI ton, and is second on the all-time list for Afghanistan, behind teammate Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who has 8 tons to his name.
Afghanistan’s First Centurion
Ibrahim Zadran has now become the nation’s first-ever centurion at the ICC ODI World Cups. He has now become the first-ever Afghanistan cricketer to do so in ICC Champions Trophy. His roasting 177-run knock lasted 146 balls, which included 12 fours and 6 sixes, as English bowlers looked helpless against the former Afghanistan captain.
Top-order batter Ibrahim Zadran is among Afghanistan’s most consistent performers, and young enough to have made his Test debut (in the team’s third ever match) before he played a white-ball international. He made 87 in that match in Chattogram, a big, historic win over Bangladesh.
Zadran, a veteran of two Under-19 World Cups in which he was his side’s top run-scorer, got off to a storming start in senior international cricket: he made three hundreds in five ODIs when he came back to the format following a two-year pause after his first match, in 2019. The last of those centuries was 162 against Sri Lanka in Pallekele, which won him the Player-of-the-Series award.
The next ODI he played, also against Sri Lanka, around seven months later, fetched him 98. A few weeks on from that, back in Chattogram, he harvested an even 100 against Bangladesh to set up a 2-1 ODI series win.
In February 2024, Zadran’s 114 in the second innings of the one-off Test in Colombo gave Sri Lanka a bit of a scare, taking Afghanistan to 214 to 2 before they lost their last eight wickets for 80-odd runs.
Earlier in the tournament Zadran had top-scored with 87 in a comfortable win against Pakistan.
Nine months on from that defeat in Mumbai, Afghanistan had their revenge, beating Australia in the T20 World Cup in St Vincent, and Zadran was a key architect with a fifty in an opening partnership of 118 with Rahmanullah Gurbaz. By that point he was in the middle of a purple patch in 2024, having made fifties against India, Sri Lanka, Ireland and Uganda, and 44 in a win over New Zealand in the T20 World Cup.
On the other hand, Ben Matthew Duckett is an English international cricketer who plays for the England cricket team in all three formats of the game. He is a left-handed top-order batsman who can also play as a wicketkeeper. Duckett plays domestically for Nottinghamshire.
In fact, at ICC Champions Trophy 2025, every completed match so far has seen at least one centurion. Ibrahim Zadran has kept the streak alive with his record-breaking ton against England.
