Bollywood Actors Who Rejected Hollywood Movies

    Read Later

The stars of Bollywood are not just in demand across India but also have a massive fan following across the globe. Even Hollywood recognizes the immense appeal and talent of Indian megastars, often offering them roles in major productions. However, several Bollywood actors have turned down significant opportunities in Hollywood for various reasons. Here are some of the biggest Bollywood stars who reportedly declined high-profile Hollywood roles.

Irrfan Khan โ€“ Turning Down Christopher Nolanโ€™s Interstellar

The late Irrfan Khan, known for his remarkable performances in films like The Lunchbox (2014) and Angrezi Medium (2020), was one of the few Bollywood actors who successfully made a mark in Hollywood. He worked in internationally acclaimed movies such as The Darjeeling Limited, Jurassic World, and Slumdog Millionaire. However, he reportedly turned down a role in Christopher Nolanโ€™s Interstellar, which later became an Oscar-nominated sci-fi masterpiece. The role required Irrfan to stay in the United States for four months, a commitment he couldnโ€™t make due to prior engagements in Bollywood. Despite this, his contribution to both Indian and international cinema remains unparalleled.

Deepika Padukone โ€“ Choosing Bollywood Over Fast & Furious 7

Deepika Padukone, one of Bollywoodโ€™s highest-paid actresses, made her Hollywood debut alongside Vin Diesel in XXX: Return of Xander Cage (2017). However, before this, she was reportedly offered a role in Fast & Furious 7 (2015), a franchise known for its high-octane action sequences. According to the Times of India, Deepika declined the offer to focus on her Bollywood commitments, particularly the filming of Happy New Year (2014). Though she missed out on a major Hollywood blockbuster, Deepika has continued to be a dominant force in Bollywood and has since expressed interest in further Hollywood projects.

    Govinda โ€“ The Avatar Controversy

Govinda, often remembered for his comic timing and dance moves, once claimed that he was offered a role in James Cameronโ€™s Avatar (2009). However, his statement was met with skepticism, as reports later suggested he was offered a role in a completely different film also titled Avatar. Govinda also claimed that he was the one who suggested the name Avatar to Cameron, a statement that has been widely debated. While the authenticity of his claim remains uncertain, Govinda remains a beloved figure in Bollywood.

Naseeruddin Shah โ€“ Declining the Role of Dumbledore

The Harry Potter franchise is one of the most beloved film series worldwide, and the role of Albus Dumbledore is considered iconic. The late Richard Harris originally played the character, but following his passing in 2002, Michael Gambon took over the role. However, Bollywood veteran Naseeruddin Shah was reportedly encouraged by his agent to audition for the role but declined. The thought of seeing Naseeruddin Shah as Dumbledore intrigues many fans, but he chose to continue his work in Indian cinema, where he remains a respected and celebrated actor.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan โ€“ Saying No to Troy

Former Miss World and Bollywood superstar Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was offered the role of Briseis in Troy (2004) opposite Brad Pitt. However, she turned it down due to concerns over the โ€œboldโ€ nature of the characterโ€™s scenes. The role eventually went to Rose Byrne, and Troy became a box office success and a landmark film in Brad Pittโ€™s career. Despite passing on this opportunity, Aishwarya has appeared in multiple international projects such as Bride and Prejudice and The Pink Panther 2.

Shah Rukh Khan โ€“ Refusing Slumdog Millionaire

Shah Rukh Khan, often referred to as the King of Bollywood, has been a global icon for decades. Known for his romantic hits like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kal Ho Naa Ho, Shah Rukh was approached to play the role of Prem Kumar, the host of Kaun Banega Crorepati, in Danny Boyleโ€™s Slumdog Millionaire (2008). However, he turned it down because he didnโ€™t want to portray a negative character. The role eventually went to Anil Kapoor, and the film went on to win Best Picture at the 2009 Academy Awards. While Shah Rukh missed out on this Hollywood milestone, he remains an influential figure in global cinema.
