Following a prolonged deadlock, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially approved the hybrid model for the Champions Trophy 2025. Dubai and Pakistan will co-host the tournament. This decision comes weeks after extensive discussions and a final agreement between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Hybrid Model in Champions Trophy 2025
On Friday, 13th December, ICC finally finalized the hybrid model for the upcoming CT 2025. Initially, the tournament was to be hosted entirely in Pakistan. However, the BCCI raised security concerns for team India and denied travelling to Pakistan.
With this new decision, matches will be divided between Pakistan and Dubai, with all matched of India be scheduled in Dubai. This new arrangement in CT 2025 will ensure the participation of all teams, with keeping in view the security and logistical concerns, highlighted by some boards.
The agreement represents a balanced compromise that satisfies the need of all stakeholders. The ICC, PCB, and BCCI seem content with the outcomes, which manages to address political sensitivities while prioritizing the sport of cricket. “This has played out exactly as we expected over the past month. The PCB, ICC, and BCCI will all be content with this arrangement,” stated Indian journalist Vikran Gupta, who has been keeping a close eye on the situation.
Pakistan’s Condition to ICC
Notably, the PCB agreed to the CT 2025 terms on the condition that the Pakistan cricket team will not travel to India for the league-stage clash against India. Instead, the match will be played in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Additional news states that, Pakistan will not receive any extra financial compensation for missing out the hosting rights for the CT 2025. However, as a concession, Pakistan will be given the opportunity to host an ICC Women’s event following the current FTP (Future Tours Programme) that concludes in 2027.
Champions Trophy 2025 Schedule
As per the draft schedule, the CT 2025 is expected to take place between February 19 and March 9, with eight teams split into two groups. Pakistan will host ten matches of the tournament. But, all three of India’s league matches, including the much-awaited India-Pakistan clash will take place in Dubai. In addition, both the semifinal and final are set to be held in Dubai. In case during the tournament, India is eliminated after the league stage, the semifinal and final will be moved to Lahore and Rawalpindi in Pakistan.
This similar approach was used in the 2023 Men’s 50-over Asia Cup. During this time, India played their matched, including the semi-finals and finals, in Colombo. Rest of the tournament was played in Pakistan.
