Delhi Shakes! 4.0-Magnitude Earthquake Sparks Fear

    Read Later

A powerful earthquake jolted Delhi early this morning, sending tremors across northern India. The 4.0-magnitude quake, which struck at a shallow depth of just 5 km, caused panic among residents. People rushed out of their homes as per safety protocols, claiming they had never experienced such strong tremors before.

Epicentre and Impact on Neighboring Cities

According to the National Centre of Seismology, the epicenter of the earthquake was located near the Durgabhai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan. The tremors were so intense that residents of high-rise buildings in Noida and Ghaziabad evacuated their homes in fear.

    Another Earthquake Hits Bihar

Shortly after the tremors in Delhi, another earthquake of magnitude 4.0 struck Bihar on Monday morning. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km, adding to the concerns of residents in the region.

    Residents Share Their Experiences

A resident of Noida recalled the terrifying experience, and said that the buildings were shaking and everyone were terrified. He also surprisingly said that they had never experienced an earthquake like this before.

    Authorities Respond to the Earthquake

The Delhi Police reassured citizens through a post on X, stating, “We hope you all are safe, Delhi!” They also urged residents to dial the emergency helpline 112 in case of any emergencies.

Prime Minister Modi’s Message to Citizens

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the situation and urged people to stay calm while following safety precautions. “Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and take necessary precautions while remaining alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely,” he posted on X.

    Precautionary Measures Before an Earthquake

Experts advise residents to always keep a disaster emergency kit ready. The kit should include:

    • Battery-operated torch with extra batteries
    • Battery-operated radio
    • First aid kit and manual
    • Emergency food (dry items) and sealed water bottles
    • Candles and waterproof matches
    • Knife and can opener
    • Chlorine tablets or water purifiers
    • Essential medicines
    • Cash and credit cards
    • Thick ropes and cords
    • Sturdy shoes

    Delhi’s Seismic Vulnerability

Delhi lies in Zone IV, which is a high-risk seismic zone. Earthquakes in this region generally range between magnitudes 5 and 6, with occasional occurrences of stronger quakes between magnitudes 6 and 7.

The high seismic activity in North India, including the Himalayas, results from the collision of the Indian plate with the Eurasian plate. This collision causes stress accumulation, which is released in the form of earthquakes.

    Historical Seismic Activity in Delhi

Officials noted that the region around Dhaula Kuan has experienced minor earthquakes every two to three years. The last recorded earthquake of notable magnitude in the area was 3.3 in 2015.

    Delhi CM Atishi Reacts

Delhi’s caretaker Chief Minister Atishi expressed her concern following the earthquake. “A strong earthquake just hit Delhi. I pray to God that everyone is safe,” she stated.

    No Reports of Casualties

Despite the intensity of the tremors, there have been no reports of injuries or casualties so far. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have urged residents to remain vigilant.

With Delhi’s susceptibility to earthquakes, experts emphasize the importance of preparedness and public awareness to minimize risks and ensure safety during such natural disasters.
