Deportation of Illegal Indian Immigrants ‘In Handcuffs’ from US

External Affairs Minister of India S Jaishankar spoke on the issue of deportation of Indians from the United States that it is the obligation of all countries to take back their nationals if they are found to be living illegally abroad. He also said that immigrants have recounted the harrowing conditions they were living in the US.

However, the deportees were given food and water on the way; their chain was opened while going to the toilet; and, medical facilities were also provided as per the need, he said.

‘Engaging with US to ensure no mistreatment to deportees

The opposition leaders had alleged that all immigrants, barring children, were handcuffed during the flight. The deportees underwent hours of scrutiny at Amritsar airport before police escorted them out in small groups in police vehicles.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar addressed the Parliament on the issue of Indians, who were living illegally in the US, being deported from the country in a military aircraft. Jaishankar met PM Modi today after opposition MPs created a massive ruckus in both houses questioning the Modi government and its “silence” over the alleged “mistreatment” of Indian citizens. The opposition lawmakers raised slogans in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, leading to the adjournment of both houses.

The controversy unfolded when a US military plane carrying 104 Indian immigrants landed on in Punjab’s Amritsar. The deportation came a week before Trump is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington. The opposition leaders alleged that all immigrants, barring children, were handcuffed during the flight. The deportees underwent hours of scrutiny at Amritsar airport before police escorted them out.

“We are engaging the US govt to ensure that the deportees not be mistreated in any manner. At the same time, the House will appreciate that our focus should be on the strong crackdown against the illegal immigration industry. On the basis of information provided by the deportees, law enforcement agencies will take necessary, preventive and exemplary action against the agents and such agencies,” said Jaishankar in Rajya Sabha.

“The deportation by the US are organized and executed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) authority. The SOP of deportation by aircraft used by ICE which is effective from 2012 provides for the use of restraint. We have been informed by ICE that women and children are not restrained,” he said.

“It is the obligation of all countries to take back their nationals if they are found to be living illegally abroad,” Jaishankar said in Rajya Sabha on the issue of deportation of Indians from the US.

USBP Chief Michael W Banks posted a video showing illegal Indian migrants boarding a US Military aircraft. The video shows the rear door of a C-17 transport plane opening and a large cargo pallet being loaded, followed by a long line of illegal migrants being marched on board. As the video pans out, shackles can be seen on the migrants’ legs, forcing a shuffled walk more commonly associated with hardened criminals and, perhaps, prisoners of war.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said the manner in which Indians staying illegally in the US were deported was “an insult to India and the dignity of Indians”. He also asserted that the government needed to issue a message to the US, making it clear that it had no right to do this in such an “insulting manner”. “We are protesting the way in which this was done. They have every legal right to deport people who are illegally in their country and we, if they are proven to be Indians, have an obligation to receive them … But to send them like this abruptly in a military aircraft and in handcuffs is an insult to India, it’s an insult to the dignity of Indians and we should certainly protest,” he said.

A US military aircraft carrying 104 Indian immigrants landed in Amritsar on Wednesday, the first such batch of Indians deported by the Donald Trump government as part of a crackdown against immigrants. Of those deported, 33 each were from Haryana and Gujarat, 30 from Punjab, three each from Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, and two from Chandigarh.

MPs of the opposition parties held a protest outside the parliament over the issue of deportation of alleged illegal Indian immigrants from the US. They protested alleging that Indian citizens were subjected to inhuman treatment while being deported from the US. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had announced then that EAM Dr S Jaishankar would make a statement in Parliament over the issue of deportation of alleged illegal Indian immigrants from the US later on.
