Brampton, a widely developing city in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is observing an amassing challenge of drug trade. In recent years, cases of drug trafficking in Brampton have been reported more often.Â
The city, known for its diverse population has seen an increase in the illegal drug trade with many Indians involved in it. The Indian-Canadian groups operating this secret trade have raised safety issues for the residents.
Drug Trafficking in Brampton: The Leading Crisis
In the year 2022, Brampton, Mississauga, and Ontario attracted media and public attention for their alleged role in drug trafficking. Brampton has become the hotspot for several illegal drug trafficking, including trade of cocaine, heroin, fentanyl, and marijuana.
Local gangs and crime groups play a leading role in exploiting the city’s suburban sprawl. However, the Peel Regional Police, which serves Brampton, is constantly making efforts to combat this issue of illegal trade. Many undercover operations, drug busts, and collaboration with other law enforcement agencies were carried out. The major operations included:
- A $65 million drug seizure led to 20 arrests on trafficking and related charges.
- A $12 million bust resulted in four trafficking arrests.
- Peel Regional Police seized $25 million in drugs and arrested five individuals on trafficking charges.
How Indians Are Linked with Drug Trafficking in Brampton?
The cases of Indian nationals being involved in drug trafficking in Brampton, is now becoming a complex issue. However, it is also important to not stereotype any community, but reports noted the involvement of several Indian nationals, especially from Punjab. They also cited their leading role in drug trafficking networks in the area.
Here’s an overview of recent cases of drug trafficking in Brampton that involved the Indians
In February 2024, three Indian-origin men were arrested from Toronto. Ayush Sharma (25), Guramrit Sandhu (60) and Shubham Kumar (29) were among the arrested. Ayush and Guramrit were the residents of Brampton while Shubham was from Calgary.
Another incident of drug trade was reported in October 2024, that involved a Punjabi woman and four Sikh youths. The arrested persons were identified as Narinder Kaur Nagra (61) along with her two sons named, Navdeep Nagra (20) and Ravneet Nagra (22). The remaining caused were Ranveer (20) and Pavneet Nahal (21). The above-mentioned cases are only 1% of the whole truth.
Community Taking Steps
Many community organizations in Brampton, especially organizations that are serving Indian-Canadian nationals are constantly addressing this issue to the population. The organizations are working on identify the root causes of people involved. Despite this, they are working on what conditions are suppressing these people to indulge in these kinds of activities.
Efforts are also being made to raise awareness about the consequences of drug trafficking within the local community. Many leaders from within the Punjabi and Indian communities have been vocal in spreading awareness. They are working to promote positivity among the youth and educating them the after effect of such situations.
While local law enforcement and community organizations taking steps to combat the issue, collaborative efforts from both can reduce the impact of drug trafficking. They are also working on protecting public safety, and support individuals struggling with addiction.
