Handloom Conclave –Manthan is inaugurated at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre Janpath, New Delhi. Handloom products to target emerging E-commerce market, which is expected to become a 325-billion-dollar market by the year 2030. It is anticipated that the ‘Handloom Sector’ should target premium niche market through confluence of modernity with tradition, innovative designs and focused market strategies. It is expected by the Union Minister of Textiles in India, Shri Giriraj Singh.
Union Minister of Textiles appealed to all the Stakeholders at “Handloom Conclave: Manthan” to make Handloom sector ‘Atmanirbhar’ by changing the conventional mindset and making handloom weaving self-sustainable through innovative technological solutions and create a brand image for handloom products in global market.
It is highlighted that the Textile Ministry is a perfect example of PM Modi’s vision of women empowerment as all the key functionaries of the Ministry are women and majority of artisan/weavers employed in the textile industry are also women.
Minister Singh also launched Handloom “Weavers E-Pehchaan” portal and Online module for Handloom Awards.
Union Minister for Textiles Shri Giriraj Singh emphasized that there is a strong need to create massive awareness regarding sustainable & eco-friendly nature of handloom product, benefits of natural dyeing, organic fibers and uniqueness of designs of Handloom products to target emerging E-commerce market, which is expected to become 325-billion-dollar market by the year 2030.
He also urged organized/corporate sector working Textile industry to develop a model to provide sustainable livelihood ensuring social security and fair remuneration for Handloom weavers. An Award will be started by Textile Ministry for corporates/producer companies/Start-ups, which will create such a model for Handloom industry and provide sustainable employment to handloom weavers for minimum 300 days per year.
Union Minister of State for External Affairs & Textiles Shri Pabitra Margherita addressed the event and emphasized that Handloom products are living testament of cultural heritage of our country.
Secretary/Textiles while addressing the event highlighted that the ‘Conclave-Manthan’ is a ‘Chintan Shivir’, which is an effort of Ministry to establish “Samvaad’ with stakeholders to address concerns regarding availability of marketing avenues and attrition of youth from weaving.
Weaving is primarily the interlacing of two sets of yarn – the warp (length) and the weft (width).
In the Conclave 3 technical Sessions were Organized
Support for start-up eco system in Handloom Sector; Handloom Marketing Avenues and strategies; and, Modelling Handloom Sector for Young Weavers: Approach and Strategy.
The key deliverables of the technical sessions were: Focusing on Niche products; Attractive packaging as an important value proposition; Promote viable employment opportunities in handloom sector to attract youth; Curriculum for training courses to be designed in such a manner that it incorporates soft skills, IT knowledge and presentation skills; Customers buy story behind the product, story behind making of product may be highlighted to attract customers; and, to incorporate handloom weaving as a part of formal education.
Weaving is practiced in many regions of India. Each region has its own traditional designs for features, designs, and colors. Handloom weaving is practiced in villages to support the livelihood of lakhs of families.
Handloom sarees are a traditional textile in Bangladesh and India. The production of handloom sarees is important for the economic development of rural India. It takes two to three days of work to complete a single saree. Many regions have a tradition of handloom sarees. The most traditional is in West Bengal.
A saree is often woven on a shuttle loom made from ropes, wooden beams, and poles. saree weaving is generally a family enterprise and one of the cottage industries in India.
Handloom sarees are made from silk or cotton threads. The handloom weaving process requires several steps to produce the final product. Traditionally, the processes of dyeing (at the yarn, fabric or garment stage), warping, sizing, warp attaching, weft winding and weaving were done by weavers and local experts around the weaving villages.
Types of handloom sarees: Kanchipuram silk sarees, Maheshwari sarees, Bagh print sarees, Chanderi silk sarees, Tussar silk sarees, Banarasi silk sarees, Baluchuri sarees, Sambalpuri sarees, Kantha stitch sarees, and Bhadi are some of the well-known Indian handloom sarees. Some handloom sarees are made using high-quality silk fabric. currently, most of the work is outsourced.
Baluchari sarees: The designs on Baluchuri sarees are inspired by mythological stories found in the temples of Bishnupur and Bankura in West Bengal. The pallas and borders display elaborate designs of flowers, animals and royal court scenes. The stories depict some features of scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Green, red, white and yellow are the most popular colours of Baluchuri sarees. A master weaver usually takes 20-25 days to complete the weaving of a Baluchuri saree.
