The India-China relationship is entering a “phase of recovery” and remains one of the most significant bilateral engagements globally, according to Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong. Speaking at the 3rd China-India Youth Dialogue in New Delhi, Ambassador Xu underscored the necessity of viewing and managing the relationship from a strategic and long-term perspective.
Ambassador Xu highlighted the progress made in diplomatic engagements, particularly through the 23rd Special Representatives’ Meeting on the China-India Boundary Question and the Vice Foreign Minister-Foreign Secretary Dialogue in Beijing. He noted that these discussions resulted in a series of common understandings, fostering a more stable and cooperative bilateral atmosphere.
Agreements on LAC and NSA meetings
India and China have been working towards normalizing their ties following an agreement last year to end the prolonged standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. The breakthrough was achieved through a high-level dialogue, including a meeting between National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on December 18. This was followed by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s visit to China for discussions with his counterpart Sun Weidong under the ‘Foreign Secretary-Vice Minister’ framework.
Ambassador Xu stated, “The 23rd Special Representatives meeting on the China-India boundary question and Vice Foreign Minister-Foreign Secretary dialogue were successfully held in Beijing, and reached a series of common understandings on the boundary question and practical cooperation.” He further emphasized that these diplomatic efforts have created a crucial opportunity to reboot China-India relations, especially by fostering stronger youth exchanges and broader cooperation between the two countries.
However, the Chinese envoy refrained from disclosing specific details regarding the outcomes of the discussions. He reiterated, “The China-India relationship is one of the most important bilateral relationships in the world. A sound and stable China-India relationship meets the expectations of the two peoples and the international community.”
Looking Ahead
Ambassador Xu expressed optimism about the trajectory of bilateral relations, particularly as India and China prepare to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties this year. The two nations recently completed the disengagement process in eastern Ladakh, following an agreement to withdraw troops from Depsang and Demchok—the last remaining friction points in the region.
