India’s Historic Success in SpaDeX Docking

    Read Later

India’s Space agency, ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) has successfully completed the docking of satellites as part of its Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX).

The space agency has announced about this historic achievement on the social media platform X :

“Manoeuvre from 15m to 3m hold point completed. Docking initiated with precision, leading to successful spacecraft capture. Retraction completed smoothly, followed by rigidisation for stability. Docking successfully completed,” ISRO wrote in the post.

This makes India the fourth country in the world to have achieved the feat. ISRO succeeds in docking two Indian satellites in space orbiting at 475 kilometers above Earth. India now becomes the fourth country after Russia, USA and China to have successfully learned to dock.

India used the indigenously developed “Bhartiya Docking System” to achieve this feat just before docking the satellites moved closer to each other.

This achievement follows an earlier trial on January 12, where ISRO brought the two spacecraft to within three meters of each other before moving them back to a safe distance in preparation for the docking maneuver.

The Indian space agency had announced earlier that its two satellites, part of the Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX), were successfully brought within three meters of each other in a trial attempt before being safely moved back to a secure distance. The space agency added that the docking process would be conducted after further analysis of the collected data.

“A trial attempt to close the distance to 15 meters and then to 3 meters was completed. The spacecraft were then moved back to a safe distance. The docking process will proceed after analyzing the data further,” ISRO had said in a post on X.

The SpaDeX project missed two previously scheduled docking attempts on January 7 and January 9. This was the fourth attempt when Indian scientists finally hit Bullseye.

Docking is a very complex process and ISRO attempted it cautiously doing several trials over a fortnight.

ISRO succeeds in docking two Indian satellites in space orbiting at 475 kilometers above Earth. India becomes the fourth country after Russia, USA and China to have successfully learnt to dock. India launched the SpaDeX mission on December 30, 2024 using the PSLV rocket. Docking is an enabling technology for future missions like Chandrayaan-4 and Bhartiya Antariksha station.

Then two Indian satellites came as close as three meters in a trial attempt for space docking and are now moving back, the Indian space agency said this morning.

“A trial attempt to reach up to 15 m and further to 3 m is done. Moving back space crafts to a safe distance. The docking process will be done after analyzing data further,” the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) said in its last update of January 12, on the Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) mission.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media X (formerly Twitter) and congratulated scientists at ISRO and the entire space fraternity for the successful demonstration of space docking of satellites. “It is a significant stepping stone for India’s ambitious space missions in the years to come,” he said.

Congratulations to our scientists at @isro and the entire space fraternity for the successful demonstration of space docking of satellites. It is a significant steppingstone for India’s ambitious space missions in the years to come.

ISRO describes the SpaDeX project as a cost-effective technology demonstrator aimed at showcasing in-space docking using small spacecraft.

In the same year, the work on Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS) near Thiruvananthapuram was also started. Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) was established in August 1969.
