    Major Step by the Cabinet: Clears Two Bills for ‘One Nation, One Election’

    In a major political initiative, Union Cabinet on Thursday approved two bills for implementing ‘One Nation, One Election.’ It also includes a Constitution amendment Bill to facilitate the simultaneous conduct of Assemblies. The decision came after three months, the Union Cabinet endorsed the recommendations of Ram Nath Kovind-led committee. This move also opens the pathway for BJP’s call to bring reform to the electoral process.

    Cabinet’s Greenchit to One Nation, One Election Bill

    The cabinet has cleared two significant legislative measures:

    A Constitutional Amendment Bill- This will ensure simultaneous conduct of Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies.

    An Ordinary Bill- This will align the elections for the Assemblies of the Union Territories of Delhi, Puducherry, and Jammu and Kashmir with those of the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies. This second bill recommends amendments to the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act-1991, the Government of Union Territories Act-1963 and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act-2019.

    These bills will be introduced in Parliament during the ongoing Winter Session, which will be wrapped on December 20. As stated by the sources, once introduced the Constitution Amendment Bill will be referred to a parliamentary committee for further inspection.

    A Step Towards Electoral Reform

    The NDA government and the opposition parties have issued rigid three-line directive for MPs, to attend the crucial session on December 13 and 14. During these two days the bills will be introduced in the Parliament.

    In the meantime, the BJP government is planning to launch a public-awareness campaign to aware people about the perks of synchronized elections.

    Aim of One Nation, One Election

    The establishment of One Nation, One Election law will: -Reduce the electoral challenges. -Minimize the cost and administrative burdens of elections. -Enhance policy implementation by synchronizing election schedules.

    Parties In Support of ONOE

    NDA allies like JD(U) and Lok Janshakti party extended their support. Regional parties like Biju Janata Dal, Shiromani Akali Dal and Ghulam Nabi Azad’s are supporting the ONOE. The parties have also praised and highlighted it potential to improve the governance efficiency.

    Parties Against ONOE

    Opposition parties like Congress and AAP are against the initiative of ONOE. The parties have expressed their concerns over its impact on federalism and the potential centralization of power. They further criticized the reform, arguing that it could undermine India’s diverse democratic fabric, as differences in state priorities and varying assembly tenures could create significant challenges.

    Despite the criticism and hurdles, the One Nation, One Election proposal is revolutionary step for India’s democratic system. Following the winter session of Parliament, the decision will write the future of election process of the country.
