The Maharastra government mandated the use of the Marathi language in all government and semi-government offices in Maharashtra. A government resolution has been released by the government, issued by the state planning department mandating the use of the Marathi language for official purposes in all forms in Maharashtra.
According to the order, employees in all govt, semi govt offices, local self govt bodies, state-run corporations, and aided offices must compulsorily use Marathi while speaking to visitors, except visitors from outside India or from other states.
Marathi Should Be Everywhere
This Government Resolution (GR) is a part of the implementation of the recommendations in the state’s Marathi language policy. After the implementation of this GR, now it is mandatory to put up boards in front of government offices regarding the use of the Marathi language and Marathi in conversation.
The GR also stated that complaints can be raised to the head of the departments if the rules are not followed, and strict actions will be taken upon the employees who are not following the rules if any fault is found after verification
According to the notification all government offices, municipal bodies, state corporations, and public institutions must display text in Marathi Devnagari script alongside Roman lettering on computer keypads and printers. Notices and signages inside the offices should also be written in Marathi. Presentations and internal communications inside the offices should also be in Marathi.
Maharashtra Official Language Act
The Marathi language policy was approved last year and this policy has recommended the use of the Marathi language in all public affairs for the preservation, conservation, promotion, dissemination, and development of the language. As per the Maharashtra Official Language Act 1964, all official documents including proposals, letters, and circulars must be written in Marathi for official use.
A new entrepreneur starting a new business should register the new name of his business in Marathi without English translation, the notification highlighted. This policy aims to promote the use of the Marathi language in the public sector and its administration. The government stands committed to expanding the use of the regional language across all departments and institutions, as stated in the notification.
Media And Advertisements
As per the new language policy that has been enforced, it is now mandatory to issue advertisements for all government-sanctioned activities to be in Marathi only. All advertisements, tenders, notices, etc given in Marathi newspapers by the state government-approved companies, boards, corporations, semi-government organizations, and local self-government bodies should be given in Marathi language only. As per the order, the concerned departments will take necessary action to budget funds for the implementation of the Marathi language policy.
In October last year, the Centre granted the status of classical language to Marathi, fulfilling a long-standing demand of the state. The Centre had then said the classical language status would lead to the creation of significant employment opportunities. The main objective of this policy is to establish the Marathi language as the language of knowledge and employment in the next 25 years.
