    Nurse cut-offs Doctor’s private part to escape gang rape

    Patna, Bihar: In a tragic turn of events, and after the month of rape and murder case of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, sparking nationwide anger and protests, here comes another shocking incident from Patna, Bihar, where a gang rape attempt has been made on a nurse in a private hospital, while one of the assaulters was a doctor and administrator of the institution.

    However, the nurse managed to escape after cutting the doctor’s private part with a surgical blade when the latter allegedly tried to rape her along with two of his associates.

    Notably, all three accused, including Dr Sunjay Kumar Sanju and two of his associates named Sunil Kumar Gupta and Awadhesh Kumar from the Mangra area of Bihar are accused of rape and are arrested by the Police.

    According to the reports, the trio consumed alcohol and was in an intoxicated state while attempting a crime with the woman who was working at the healthcare center. When Sanju tried to rape her, she took a surgical blade and cut his private part and later escaped from the place.

    After hiding in a field, the doctor called the police, and a team of officials led by SP Vinay Tiwari from the Bihar Police department took action and arrested the doctor from the hospital. However, the doctor is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital for his injuries.

    This is to be noted that the victim has been working at the hospital for a year. In a recent statement, she told the officials that she used the surgical blade for her self-defense from the accusers.

    During the investigation, the police detained a few things from the hospital including a blood-stained bedsheet, mobile phones, and alcohol. While the CCTV on the crime scene was disabled.

    A clear picture of Women’s safety in India

    These heartbreaking incidents recorded in the past few weeks have witnessed women’s safety being one of the major concerns in almost every part of the country. Due to such incidents, women especially in India feel unsafe and uncomfortable working during night shifts due to apparent issues including lack of Police Patrolling, street lighting, rise in consumption of alcohol and drugs, unhealthy societal patterns, etc.

    A recent report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reveals a grim picture of crimes against women in India. In 2022, the country recorded 4,45,256 cases, which means 51 rape cases happening every hour.

    While a report also revealed that India has recorded around 81,471 cases of rapes, sexual assaults, and The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) cases. In addition to this, there are many such cases in which the crime has never come in front and remains behind the curtains of the improper and inefficient approach of the system and the legal authorities in the countries.

    However, there’s an immediate and stringent need to address these concerns surrounding the country. Adopting a multifaceted approach, including better urban planning, public awareness campaigns, and a stronger legal law could play a pivotal role in combating such social challenges.
